The Rio Grande (Bravo), being just meters from my childhood home, led me to Retablos! Though I shared many of Octavios haunts mentioned in the book, I had to hear his story. Wow, was I amazed, It was full of details and events that I experienced just in a manner that a snooty little brother of Octavios classmate would experiance. The detailed colorful descriptions of the bus rides, La Migra (Immigration officers) patrolling our streets, regular appearing people crossing through our yard that was adjacent to the "Ditch," the buffer zone on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande, in an effort to catch the bus to either the Pueblo of Ysleta or to "El Centro," Downtown El Paso, where these Mexican nationals, "illegals" worked. It is his stories written in the book, that are my stories, and if you have been to my barrio or only have been to a Mexican ran grocery in Fairmont Nebraska, I urge you to read this offering from a man who spent his youth just a few dusty meters from the Mexican border, who used his bicycle as a way to escape his reality while at the same time embrace his culture; "that being a son of dreamer parents," who put their children first to ensure they had what every Amercian child had, "a chance!"to become someone! Upon reading Retablos you will be enlightened to life on the border that really has changed much since our childhoods!
I loved this book. He opens up the book with a description of what memories are and how they define us. How we tell our stories to ourselves until they become who we are. What we live through becomes a narrative that becomes us. As you read each chapter you feel as if you are experiencing the author's memories as your own. I have only experienced this before when I read John Steinbeck.Each story is written with the economy of poetry. Every word is palpable. They unfold the way memories do, like movies with feelings. You are watching but you are also living them.I felt as if I was living the author's life through his own mind. It is hard to describe, you really need to read it.
Retablos is sometimes sweet and sometimes harrowing. Beautiful prose by one of the best playwrights in America. The short chapters created tableaus of people and events that have stayed with me long after putting the book down. This is a wonderful book to read and share during a time when the border is so much in the news.
This reminded me of my youth. It crosses the boundaries of time and race. Read it. It will touch your heart.
This book is a collection of memories painted with blood, love, laughter, tears and romance. From the first few sentences, you are captured by the language and artistry of Solis' poetry. Some of the stories are short enough to read then move on. But even after finishing one, you'll find you are several more stories in and still going. This is the perfect book to take with you on a road trip, a flight, camping, or just sitting in a coffee shop. But be aware, you will fall deep into the words and cry, laugh, become nostalgic and frustrated while remembering and reliving your own childhood. I'm on my second read already.
