"I say,'You are gods, children of the Most High, all of you;" Psalm 82:6"Those who partake of the divine nature do so through the promises of Christ who is God. Although the expression is different from Paul's, the content is not: participation in Christ wins incorruption and immortality." N. RussellDeification in Essense:Among the Eastern Church Fathers deification is expressed as filial adoption through baptism, and it is iterated that Abba Kyrillos VI (Coptic Patriarch, 1959-71) identified 'the light of baptism,' spotting any non baptized who reported for Eucharistic communion! His mystical company of the Desert Fathers taught that attaining likeness to God comes through Theo-gnosis (knowing God) and kenosis (self emptying). Catholic Mystics describe it as the ascent of the soul to God, the participation of the soul in the divine attributes of immortality. In Summa, it is the transformation of human nature by divine grace.Although the first mention of deification as a concept was in Irenaeus' infamous exchange formula (God became man that man might become god), it was in Alexandria that the doctrine of deification was fully elaborated and extensively utilized in the defense of its Orthodoxy. Since J. Gross wrote his most comprehensive study of deification, "La divinisation du chrétien d'apres les Peres Grecs," in 1938, discussions of deification often suffer from insufficient historical context and from an obscurity about what deification precisely means and what process does it involve. This attitude has been recently amended by the outstanding Patristic scholar who wrote books about the Desert Fathers, Theophilus and Cyril.Deification, Divinization, and Theosis:Why did the terms, Deification, Divinization, and Theosis, based on the biblical expression 'partakers of the divine nature' present such difficulty, for most Protestants and Catholics? Why is the Eastern Orthodox doctrine of Theosis presently engaging the Coptic Orthodox Church, theologians and Clergy in a hot debate? Even when this Church, whose Alexandrine fathers Origen, Athanasius* and Cyril** respectively have initiated, developed and utilized it to defend Orthodoxy against heresies starting with Arianism, all the way to Nestorianism? While Athanasius declares, "The Word became flesh in order, both, to offer this sacrifice and that we, participating in His Spirit, might be deified," Cyril made it the over-riding motif of his Christological defense against the Diophysites. The Alexandrine Church doctrine that by the incarnation, human nature is deified and become participant in the divine nature was Cyril's favorite theme, that he iterated over forty times. Why was Divinization avoided by Apophatic mystics and Diophysite Theologians?Russell compellingly distinguishes two of the Divinization opponents, "two kinds of writers: those who distinguished in an apophatic way between the essence of God and his operations or energies, and those who employed a Logos-anthropos Christology, which did not depend upon the concept of participation. It is noteworthy that writers of the Antiochene school do not quote '2 Peter 1:4'." Conversely, adds Russell, "the text was used by those who operated with a Logos-sarx Christology (Alexandrine Fathers) and with a doctrine (deriving ultimately from Origen) of a dynamic participation in God. Such a doctrine presupposed a theology which was personalist rather than essentialist, and an understanding of 'nature' which included the attributes of the living God."Partakers of Divine Nature:The above verse, quoted from 2 Peter 1:4, was altogether problematic. Used initially by Origen, whose initiatives formed the Alexandrian school, then by Athanasius few times, and later by Cyril repeatedly, but never used again until Maximus the Confessor, quoted only twice. Russell furthers his great book themes, expounding the history of Eastern Church Theology, asking himself, "Why was 2 Peter 1:4 popular with Cyril but not with Maximus (a student of Origen)?Once he had embarked on his controversy with Nestorius, Cyril needed an alternative way of speaking about deification. Following in the tradition of Origen and Athanasius, he had such an alternative way to hand in the expression 'partakers of the divine nature'. His Christology is one in which the participation of the assumed humanity in the divinity of the Logos, is a key concept. He compares it with the participation of the faithful in Christ; 'corporeally' through the Eucharistic communion, and spiritually through kenotic life. Maximus, with a Capadocian / Dionysian (ps-Areopagite) background, did not participate in the 'Divine Partaking' tradition. While, his Neo-Chalcedonian Christology, revised, was still based on the concept of duality of natures, but in reciprocal communion, had no real appeal for the Petrine text. On the contrary, Cyril's anthropology is analogous to his Christology. Man attains the divinely graced life, not by participation in God as much as by synergy, a mutual reactive relationship between the Lord through Christ and those of the faithful.Norman Russell on Divinization:Norman Russell, wrote recently, in an enlightening essay entitled, 'Partakers of the Divine Nature' in the Byzantine Tradition, explaining and defending the Alexandrine based Biblical theology from Origen's First Principles, comparing to Maximus the confessor. He explains, "Among the Greek (speaking) Fathers deification is expressed variously as filial adoption through baptism, as the attaining of likeness to God through gnosis and dispassion, as the ascent of the soul to God, as the participation of the soul in the divine attributes of immortality and incorruption, as the transformation of human nature by divine action, as the eschatological glorification of both soul and body, and as union with God through participation in the divine energies. In Byzantine writers the emphasis falls on the Pauline aspect of filial adoption and incorporation into Christ, the sacraments becoming all-important as the means by which divine life is communicated to the believer."In Appreciation:In my long career as a Catechist and Commentator, it is my first time to be urged to write a review of a theology book without the book being at hand. In a telecom with the Nottingham Patristic, and Cambridge 'Coptic Orthodox' theologian, I proposed this great unbiased scholarly work as a reference for both debating Coptic parties on the subject. Dr. George Bebawi, then praised the Oxford scholar, associating him with the eminent Syriac scholar Dr. Sebastian Brock, and evaluated the book as a 'Doctorate Thesis', carefully reviewed for the benefit of intellectual Christians. His colleague Dr. Andrew Louth, has rightly wrote, "Norman Russell presents his subject with the assurance of a master ... He displays not just understanding of the material, but also a clear awareness of the field of patristic studies ... this is a masterpiece of what historical discussion of Christian doctrine should be: historically acute and theologically perceptive."A Qualified Review:"Norman Russell has given us a rigorous account of the historical development of the doctrine of deification and its technical terminology, and at the same time he has offered us clear conceptual categories for distinguishing different approaches to deification in the Christian tradition. The stated subject of this book is "Christian deification from its birth as a metaphor to its maturity as a spiritual doctrine" Daniel Keating* On the Incarnation (De Incarnatione Verbi Dei)** The Appropriation of Divine Life in Cyril of Alexandria (Oxford Theological Monographs)

One of the best studies that no on can ignore. It is a great reference book of a great quality.

Dr. Norman Russel's seminal work on the doctrine of deification is a must-read for anyone researching or interested in the topic. Following a clear path throughout history, Dr. Russell traces the origins of the doctrine from pre-Christian societies to the later Byzantine fathers, such as St. Maximus the Confessor. His method strikes me as scholarly, but accessible at the same time. I would also recommend Partakers of the Divine Nature: The History and Development of Deification in the Christian Traditions for those interested in this topic.

As far as I know, this book is the best one stop read on this central Christian doctrine. All of theology, in its relation to humanity, is really a footnote to the reality of deification. But what does that really mean? Are we absorbed into God? Are we just made like him by decree? Or do we participate in the very life of God and yet remain distinct in our nature and personhood? How this was experienced and worked out in the early church is the subject of this most detailed book.Based largely on Jules Gross' work (La Divination du chrétien d'après les Pères grecs), Russell begins by tracing the main points of Gross, adding the criticism that Gross failed to explain, and take into account, the content in which the Greek Fathers wrote and discussed theosis. He notes that although deification talk was common in many pre-Dionysian (6th century) theologians, they were not doctrinally consistent in their usage and meaning. It is finally with St Maximus the Confessor that the theology of deification is worked out systematically.I am leaving tons of content out, but rest assured that if you have an interest in the topic from the Greek perspective, this is the book to get. But it is not a book for beginners. For that, you may find uncreated energy a useful primer.Although Russell's focus is Greek theology, he does offer an appendix of Syrian and Latin Fathers on the topic, along with a brief discussion of modern authors on the subject, such as Rahner, Zizioulas and Mascall.I would strongly recommend the writings of Valdimir Lossky, especially The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church and Orthodox Theology: An Introductionon this subject. For a great East-West discussion, See A. Williams' The Ground of Union: Deification in Aquinas and Palamas. As well, please see Deification in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition: A Biblical Perspective,Being With God: Trinity, Apophaticism, And Divine-Human Communion,Theosis: Deification in Christian Theology (Princeton Theological Monograph) and Deification in Christ: Orthodox Perspectives on the Nature of the Human Person (Contemporary Greek Theologians, Vol 5).My other reviews are often on this topic, and you can find some gems there to further your exploration of the implications of the incarnation, death and resurrection of our Lord.

We look forward to purchasing these calendars every year...thank you.

This is the best F1 calendar I've found readily available in the US. There are better ones out of Europe, but I've only found those at F1 events.

This is for my granddaughter's Christmas. She wants a F1 calender every year and this one also had the birthdays of every current F1 driver. She has been to Monza, Spa and Silverton.

Buy one every year. Great pics!

Awesome pictures as always.

Great calendar, great pictures. Just have to note that October's picture says Max Verstappen is part of Scuderia Toro Rosso, not Red Bull Racing.

A History of Future Cities

Review

In these deft portraits of St. Petersburg, Russia; Bombay, India; Shanghai, China; and Dubai, UAE; journalist Brook (The Trap) artfully condenses and illustrates three centuries of revolutionary urban development and globalizing impulses. An intimate, canny comparative study of four of the great world cities--St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Mumbai and Dubai. . . . [With an] accessible, entertaining generalist's perspective . . . Brook looks at these metropolises as a testament to human imagination and as a barometer of future promise. . . . Enormously elucidating and relevant. --Kirkus ReviewsPersuasive and lushly detailed.Uncommonly interesting and intelligent. The pleasure in Mr. Brook's unusual history is in his descriptions of the creation of these cities. The deeper message, though, is about the tensions such cities create. An interesting thesis about the city's role in fomenting political change in the modern era.'Instant cities' like Shenzhen, China, may seem like twenty-first-century twins of 'disposable cities' like rust-belt Camden, New Jersey. But in this probing new book that is at once both charming and reflective, Daniel Brook tells the story of urban hybrids conceived to fuse Western cosmopolitanism and local culture. His close but never pedantic reading of these metropolises puts the city back at the center of our vision, reminding us that in new and old towns alike, the urban amalgam of creativity, diversity, and mobility offers a key that not only unlocks the past but also opens the door to our future. --Benjamin R. Barber, author of Jihad vs. McWorld[An] inspired tour of the postmodern city. . . . Invigorating. "Persuasive and lushly detailed. "Uncommonly interesting and intelligent. "

#198,077 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book follows the inception and the progress of four cities; St. Petersburg ,Shanghai, Bombay, and Dubai. They share two important characteristics: they were planned as cities of the future and they are Eastern cities oriented toward the West. He points out that Orient is a noun meaning east and a verb meaning to place oneself in space. All four of these cities were founded on a vision. Peter the Great converted a swampy backwater into his vision of Amsterdam, then the wealthiest city on the earth. Historians have often noted that the city appeared as if set there from the sky. Shanghai was the vision of foreign investors. After forcing China to open its gates to trade, they developed Shanghai as the modern foreign capital of import/export. Bombay was modeled on the British model of civilization and commerce. Dubai was the dream of a sheikh to build infrastructure and convert a desert into the center of the world. The premise of the city of tomorrow is a fascinating one, and this book is a wealth of information. Brook has a scholarly style and the reading is dense but accessable. I am familiar with all four cities, but was interested and surprised by many of the observations. Brooks compares and contrasts the cities through the years of their growth and development. In Dubai's case, there are not so many years. He discusses how the architecture reflects the philosophy of each period and traces the trends of building in context of politics. In the final section, he examines the status of each city and the ways it has or has not lived to the dream of its inception. Most cogent to me was reading how each of the cities had the same startling appearance to the world in their birth as Dubai presents now. Each city has had a dream for its citizens, although mostly this dream was only meant for the wealthy and sometimes for some nationalities and not others. But in its day, each city depended for its growth on the huge numbers of refugees seeking work and shelter within its walls. It is a fascinating premise and a book well worth reading.

This book describes the transformations of four artificially created cities: St Petersburg, Mumbai, Shanghai and Dubai. Cities open on the world but without an hinterland. Their architecture and mores borrowed from outside . But on this apparent artificial soil an incredible creative culture flourished. The first Chinese newspaper free of censorship appeared in Shanghai in the 30s, in a city created by opium traders! This book is a celebration of cities as international meeting places of cultures, ideas and technology.

This is a well thought out survey of up and comer cities throughout the last few centuries. It identifies cycles of growth, overgrowth, reinvention, stagnation, revolution and hope that are worth considering today as we look at our own urban hubs and follow their evolution. HFC is a thinking person's time travel book to urban centers that promised to change the world (in fact, they did).

Brook's analysis of St. Petersburg, Mumbai, Dubai and Shanghai is phenomenal. In the first level, he presents a detailed overview of the history of these three cities which, in and of itself is quite interesting to an average reader. However, his analysis has even larger implications with regards to globalism and exchange of ideas. His analysis of the cities' roles as catalyzers of change and development via bringing millions of people together is an interesting and a valid perspective.

As a matter of full disclosure, I'll admit that I'm a long-time friend of the author's, a fact that upon finishing this book fills me with both pride and a little bit of envy. It's a brilliant book, and for starters far more gracefully written and genuinely funny than a book of its intellectual ambition has a right to be. Dan is the anti-Thomas Friedman: he visits the "flattest", most globalized places on earth and emerges with (often hilarious) stories that illustrate both the uniqueness and the humanity of their inhabitants. On to that intellectual ambition. As I see it, the book concerns two pressing questions.First, when will we reach a point where "modernity" is no longer "Western" any more than agrarian culture is "Sumerian"? To some degree, the answer might lie elsewhere from the four cities the book considers: Tokyo and Seoul come to mind as cities that are both thoroughly modern and thoroughly non-Western (or at least that show the ability to assimilate Western influences on their own terms). But for much of the world, the legacies of colonialism and underdevelopment remain pressing realities. In describing the history of St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Mumbai, and Dubai, the book gives a clear impression of how the Russian, Chinese, Indian, and Emirati inhabitants of their global cities struggled with the implications of aspiring to foreign, modern ideals and contending with the power of foreign, modern institutions.Second, what does it mean for a city to be "organic" in an age where powerful agents, whether the Chinese Community Party, Dubai Inc., or the private developers of Mumbai, can finance and project manage ready-made districts constituting entire cultural milieus. To the extent that the cities described in the book inflict on cultural vertigo their inhabitants, they are extreme examples of the scale on which urban development now happens throughout the world. In Atlanta, there might not be a need or demand for an English-themed suburban village complete with British-style public school, but there are developments on the scale of towns or even small cities that cater to buyers of homes in the $220,000 to $240,000 range. What does it mean for our social and cultural environments to be curated by powerful institutions? Implicit in the book's probing of the meaning of these Frankensteinian cities is the question of how residents of any contemporary city form their own genuine culture.Highly recommended.

Bought this book for a brother in-law-in-law. I liked it already so I bought it for him because he's a history teacher. He will like it too. Packed in a bit too tightly with another order.

Col L'Heureux presented his material in a very clear and sequential story from his early days to his selection to pilot Marine One the carries the President. It is an honest and indepth book with lots of personal experiences flying Marine One. I really enjoyed reading this book

and the presidents they served. As a Marine officer I learned a lot about just how they operated. And the men they served. I especially loved learning about the friendship of a Marine colonel and President George W. Bush. It told about devotion of the pilot who supported him and the kindness and humor of a president and his family. Agree with his politics or not, George W. Bush is a real man and someone I would be proud to know and serve. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Marine One and how it operates.

Great autobiography of Ray L'Heureux, but no technical details of Marine One which is why I bought the book.

Excellent book! Gives the reader a look inside a world only a select few get to be a part of.

While I very much admire the author's enthusiasm, and the "local boy makes good" theme, the ego of the author gets very tiresome, and repetitive.I have the utmost respect for military personnel, but enough of the "I love myself" aspect of this book.

A good biography of a man who achieved his dream! Ray L'Heureux embodies what's all good in a man that has integrity, great character, motivated, disciplined and all around fantastic person. Glad I read it. A military person would appreciate the story from that standpoint.

This could have been a great book, but it wasn't, and i don't recommend you wasting your money on it. This book was tough to get through because it was so boring. Now maybe thats a good thing, because if the Colonel's helicopter had been attacked, or if it crashed it could have been devastating for our nation. But the book just dragged on until the parts concerning the Colonel's relationship with President Bush the second. The interaction btwn the President and his pilot was very moving. If the book had been solely about President Bush and the Colonel, it would have been very enjoyable and insightful. But it wasn't, and thats why I can't recommend this book to anyone, unless u can borrow it from someone for free.

Loved this book. As most Marines the Marines of HMX-1 are ghosts. We know they are there but none of us ground pounders have ever spoken to them. We all are very proud of the fact the U.S.Marines fly the president of the US. Took me two days to read it.
