#57,006 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I’ll try to give a review without explaining too much on the scenario, it is in the synopsis anyway. Instead I’ll focus on what I liked and disliked so other fans of romantic sci-fi can make a choice on whether to pass it or give it a chance. At first, the story started so well: strong female lead with interesting history, unusual occupation and seemingly strong character. Even quite cliche alien abduction did not phase me as writing was done masterfully. And later introduction of mysterious hero, as events unfolded, went smoothly as well. However, something happened at one scene at the pool after which events stopped making sense or look believable (ok, I know that sci-fi is unbelievable by definition but still...). The heroine suddenly transformed into witless wimp following only her hormones and beautiful dark grey derrière of her admirer (one would think that his muscles were described enough but I was meeting the passages about their impossible-to-resist beauty again and again). The hero was not much better, as author suddenly left his inner world and motivations for the reader to guess about, leaving only questionable actions behind. And bam! - suddenly they are both in love and can’t leave without each other. Well, come on...Sadly, I left the book at appr. 50%.So perhaps my review is not an honest one. But I simply cannot waste my time for the piece which lost its “magic” for me.

Thank goodness for authors who are willing to take the time and effort to convert their fabulous ideas into books! Stephanie West not only has amazingly creative ideas, but is also a wee bit kinky and I love it. It is very rare to have a book of this length without many areas that drag. With rare exception there were no parts that became boring (perhaps one or two erotic scenes towards the end, when I just wanted to know what happened next), and I had a hard time putting the book down once I started.Although there are a smattering of editing misses through the book understanding is not hampered. The writing in Nameless Fate shows marked improvement over previous books, . Mainly it is just such a riveting story, with strong characters, and a fascinating world. I sure would love to see a picture of Zaftan and Blaidd - it's particularly difficult for me to picture Zaftan, who is apparently a species that looks like elephants. The supporting characters do add a lot of entertainment to the story. Now to wait for Blaidd's story to come out. That should be fun!

What a fantastic book, a re-read for sure, you can't help but being sucked into the story from the 1 page, this book was EPIC, Harper was a strong character along with Nameless, what a pair and what adventures they had. The other characters in the story were just wonderful and surprising hero I did not see that one coming. If you like Sci-fi romance you will love this book, do not let it pass you by. There is only one problem, now the wait begins for the next one, I hope ms. West is finding time to focus on that book you must keep writing and hopefully it will become a full time job, you have a talent that needs to shouted out!

First off, I like Stephanie West’s writings. I think she has promise. That being said, the beginning of this story, how our heroine, Harper, was a volunteer for a medical study of birthmarks, was a bit weak. The birthmark was a good idea, just the medical study part just didn’t seem to fit her schedule of stakeouts and catching crooks. As the story progresses, the story gets better, the story and characters come alive. And the characters Stephanie brings to us are very creative. When the end came, I wasn’t ready. I wanted more. And that is a sign of a good writer. I look forward to more of Stephanie’s works.

The cancer study to find the birthmark didn't work for me but I guess finding her was "fate". There were a few other things but I don't want to give away spoilers and the birthmark quest happens at the beginning. I like that Harper was strong and smart, not a simpering woman. Nameless was great. The editing could use some work. There were a few wrong words that would be easily missed by spell check.

Harper is kidnapped and taken to another planet. She says no to being a sex slave and breeder, so she is out in a horrible prison. Nameless protects her and makes her his even though she isn't always happy about it. Plenty of action and romance with a lot of sex thrown in. Hea

I love the idea of being thrown in prison such as the main female character was. I loved the world that the author built. it was interesting to see the inmates and how there was essentially a world within another. I loved the characters and the development. The female character is strong without being overbearing. great read

I really enjoyed the story line of this book. Aliens abduct female has been used many times but the story line is not like any other. Well developed characters. Loved the heroine Harper. Strong intelligent female. Loved Nameless. He was the main male character who has beaten the odds living life in the Hold. When these two come together it's fireworks! There are many supporting roles in the book that have great potential for their own books if this becomes a series. Definite must read!

Heart Of Thomas, by Moto Hagio

Review

“Moto Hagio is a genius and leader in the style of shojo manga (comics for women readers). [...] The stories aren’t about make-up and kitties, though. They’re actually deep, complicated, and often deal with family relationships.” - Giant Robot“Hagio Moto remains one of the most criminally undertranslated mangaka to have barely made an impression on the English-language manga market. It is criminal because of the profundity of her impact on the art form in Japan as it hit a crucial development phase in the 1970s. A Drunken Dream and Other Stories is... a down payment on the exploration of that legacy as it collects a number of short pieces that hint at the span and depth of her work...” - World Literature Today

I ordered it on a Monday, it told me it’d come either on Friday or Wednesday of next week. Nope, it came the Wednesday of that very same week. I was so surprised and happy. It came in a box and for the most part it’s in good condition ( I see a few dents but I don’t care I’m a happy customer ). It’s a little heavy and pretty. It came with an Introduction of a group called the fourty-niners/ the year 24 group which was a cool bonusStory Review: So I was reading this story late at night till the morning online, and I’m thinking the whole time “ are they gonna end up together or what?” Till I was near the end and wishing there were more chapters because I was wondering how this would possibly end.A kid named Thomas kills himself in the first few pages and he dedicates his suicide for his love- Juli. Juli hears about it and is still in denial about Thomas’s love for him. Then another guy comes to school named Eric and he looks exactly like Thomas which emotionally screws Juli up because he’s suffering with different emotions. That’s all I’ll say.I think this is a wonderful story that everybody should give a chance. I’m grateful I was able to buy an actual copy.

I originally purchased this book merely out of curiosity and without a lot of expectation. I didn't expect to like it as much as the newer boys' loves stories because of the old fashioned art and the plain, slow moving story line. Much to my surprise, I actually found myself delighting in this book.First of all, there is the presentation. It is classily done with hardback cover & delicious, crisp, white smooth print papers on the inside. When I start to read it, I am immediately engrossed. The story line itself is pretty simple - it starts with the suicide of a boy named Thomas at a German boarding school. He left a suicide note for another boy, Juli, for whom he has an unrequited love. Juli had determined to be the perfect society member and would have continued to ignore this incident except for the sudden appearance of Erich, a boy whose look is a dead ringer for Thomas. So began the unfurling of this fascinating tale of how innocent loves and friendships among the boys in a German boarding school that save their souls as they grow into men. What makes this book a keeper for me is definitely the translation and the editing. The prose and the language used in this manga fit the period and location so well. The conversations are fluid, easy to understand and impart the atmosphere of the late 20th century German boarding school. It is something that I rarely come across when reading translated mangas with historical settings. In fact, I am so impressed with Fantagraphics' publication of "Heart of Thomas" that I would like to request Matt & Co to consider licensing "Sakura Gari" by Watase Yuu if it is still up for grabs. It is one of the best historical yaoi works by one of Japan's most prominent mangakas that is long overdue for English publication. It is definitely on one of the most requested titles. I think Fantagraphics can do it justice if they give it the same type of investment they accorded "Heart of Thomas" and it will be highly profitable with short payback period. Please consider it.

I don’t have much to say other than that I really loved this book. I don’t usually buy manga, I prefer to read it online since there are so many out there. This may actually be the second manga I’ve read about a boy romance that takes place in a boarding school the first being “Natsu e no Tobira” (there’s a boy in there who likes another boy) and “Kaze to Ki no Uta” reading that manga and watching (I watched the film before reading the manga) the film especially sickened and somewhat intrigued my interest in boys boarding school romances/ boys who like or love each other (although I just would like to make it clear that I’m not a person who wholeheartedly supports things like that) and just other books with good looking almost perfect boys with maybe some kind of issues or just any interesting story about a boy in general.

This shipped VERY quickly, so I was glad about that, but when I cracked it open and started reading, I became even happier. As far as the art style goes, I'm not completely sold on it. The style has what we in the web-comics business call "Same Face Syndrome," which means that, were you to shave each character bald, you wouldn't really be able to tell them apart. It would be an easy fix to simply add a few different eye shapes and nose shapes to her repertoire, but I'm not about to fault her for something as small as that. It's obvious that the author put a lot of care into each page, as each is rendered with the same level of quality as the last. Now onto the plot: Yes, this is about an all-boys school, and yes, it deals very heavily with same-sex crushes. Yes, it deals with the aftermath of suicide, and trying to carry on after (SPOILER ALERT!) pseudo-sexual assault (I add the prefix "pseudo" because it is implied that the assault was sexual, but it's never confirmed to any rational degree.) It is never explicit, as the most that occurs is a kiss between two boys. That's all, and if that's too much for you, then don't buy this book.Normally I don't purchase or read what can be considered "shonen-ai," but I was asked to read this book for a college course and I honestly enjoyed reading it. I'm very glad I own it now, and I won't be selling this particular "textbook" after the course is over.Note: This book is composed in the traditional Japanese format, so it will be read "backwards" from what you would expect. Thankfully, the book has a warning page in case you crack it open on the opposite side, so I was quite thankful for that.

I love Hagio's manga. Heart of Thomas is one of my favorites. Characters are well developed. And the storyline is intriguing. I'm so in love with Oskar!

The Heart of Thomas is an immersive page turner about teen suicide and gay spirituality. One of the most unique books I've ever read. 5 stars! Recommended for fans of Osamu Tezuka and Kaori Yuki.

The Case against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There

From Booklist

*Starred Review* On the eve of the new millennium, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), listed water fluoridation as one of the twentieth-century’s 10 greatest public-health achievements. Yet according to the authors of this painstakingly researched exposé of fluoridation’s overall ineffectiveness and toxicity, endorsements such as these from the CDC and other health organizations are motivated more by face-saving politics than credible research. Fluoridation advocates who have previously branded detractors as conspiracy theorists and shills for “junk science” will be hard pressed to debunk the hundreds of peer-reviewed studies and sound scientific reasoning presented here. In demonstrating fluoridation’s ineffectiveness, the authors cite exhaustive evidence proving fluoride’s only benefits are topical, as in toothbrushing, as opposed to swallowing. But the case against fluoride’s alleged safety, even in small doses, is more alarming, with multiple studies showing fluoride’s probable complicity in lowered intelligence scores, thyroid dysfunction, hip fractures, and the ominously rising incidence of osteosarcoma in boys. The authors’ academic, hyperbole-free writing style serves them well in marshaling a series of facts that, all by themselves, expose fluoridation as a false panacea. It remains to be seen, however, whether the public-health community will give this landmark work due credit or continue to rubber stamp an outdated policy that, like bloodletting and trepanation, properly belongs on the scrap heap of sham medical interventions. --Carl Hays

Review

Wise Traditions-“The insanity of intentional water fluoridation is examined from every angle in this book. International law forbids dumping fluoride waste into the sea but it is accepted in American drinking water. As stated in the toothpaste disclaimer above, the FDA officially considers fluoride to be a drug. This drug has never been approved by the FDA. Contaminating drinking water with fluoride can be most charitably characterized as an experiment which violates the Nuremburg Code prohibiting experimental human treatment without informed consent. China, India, Japan and most of Europe do not fluoridate their water. Toward the end of the book the authors pull out one of my all-time favorite quotes from the late Michael Crichton. ‘Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled … The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus . . . There is no such thing as consensus science. If it’s consensus, it isn’t science. If it’s science, it isn’t consensus. Period.’ THUMBS UP.”Choice Magazine- Water fluoridation is a major controversy pitting prevention (dental caries) against ethics (involuntary drug exposure). Connett (emer., St. Lawrence Univ.), Beck (emer., Univ. of Calgary), and Micklem (emer., Univ. of Edinburgh) present compelling but not always convincing arguments for discontinuing fluoridation. They emphasize systemic treatment's low efficacy, alternative preventive approaches, the public's involuntary exposure, and potential toxicity. Although not uniquely American, water fluoridation is more popular in the US than in most countries. If ingestion of fluoride were very effective in preventing caries, the authors would still argue against the practice on ethical grounds. Six parts cover ethical arguments, lack of evidence of efficacy, the policy gamble, toxicity, the precautionary principle, and vested interests. Some inconsistencies are evident. The book emphasizes uncertainties in epidemiologic studies of efficacy, but deemphasizes uncertainties in toxicity reports, creating an imbalance appropriate for a polemic but not for a scientific treatise. Fluoridation advocates will interpret this as evidence that the antifluoridation point of view is exaggerated, whereas sympathetic readers will find their resolve strengthened. Alternatives such as fluoride supplements exist, but would not reach the poor populations that need them. This is a thought-provoking work for students of environmental policy and public health. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through graduate students; general readers. Booklist, Starred Review- "On the eve of the new millennium, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), listed water fluoridation as one of the twentieth-century’s 10 greatest public-health achievements. It remains to be seen, however, whether the public-health community will give this landmark work due credit or continue to rubber stamp an outdated policy that, like bloodletting and trepanation, properly belongs on the scrap heap of sham medical interventions."American Academy of Environmental Medicine Newsletter- “At once painstakingly-documented and also highly-readable, The Case Against Fluoride brings new research to light, including links between fluoride and harm to the brain, bones, and kidneys, and argues that while there is possible value in topical applications like brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, the evidence that swallowing fluoride reduces tooth decay is surprisingly weak. The Case Against Fluoride doesn't question the good intentions of dentists who support fluoridation, but rather explores the poor science, bizarre tactics, biased reviews, and puzzling motivations of a relatively small number of influential people who continue to push this practice on a largely ill-informed public.”"Sweden rejected fluoridation in the 1970s and, in this excellent book, these three scientists have confirmed the wisdom of that decision. Our children have not suffered greater tooth decay, as World Health Organization figures attest, and in turn our citizens have not borne the other hazards fluoride may cause. In any case, since fluoride is readily available in toothpaste, you don't have to force it on people."--Arvid Carlsson, Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology (2000) and Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology, University of Gothenburg"Alfred North Whitehead said the scientific method means leaving 'options open for revision.' An ancient Roman adage says that 'whatever touches all must be approved by all.' These characterizations of science and democracy are the reasons for reading this book. Especially if you and your family are drinking administratively mandated fluoridated water."--Ralph Nader "This book clearly shows that water fluoridation is poor public policy and must end. As a concerned citizen, I applaud the authors for bringing this issue to the world's attention."--Ed Asner "For anyone who has ever wondered why cities add fluoride to water-and questioned whether they should. Written with clear and easy-to-read prose, and supporting citations, The Case Against Fluoride carefully lays out the arguments against fluoridation and reasons why it should be discontinued. The authors examine the evidence on fluoridation and conclude convincingly that it should now be considered 'harmful and ineffective.'"--Dr. Hardy Limeback, Professor and Head of Preventative Dentistry, University of Toronto

A well-written case, amply demonstrating that there is not only no need for fluoride in the drinking water, but that there is convincing scientific evidence that it is contributing to the 'dumbing-down' of the populace.

This really needs 10 stars! It scientifically and factually reveals the hazard that water fluoridation is causing. It also analyzes the studies that supposedly support fluoridation and reveals the faulty findings. I refer to it at least weekly as I seek to verify the information in this book with new studies that have come out. If you want an objective look at the harm Fluoride is causing, this summary of scientific studies is an easy read for non-scientists, and a treasure trove of information revealing the underlying cause of most of our chronic diseases. A MUST read.

Good text; only read half of it since it seems repetitive.

The science is finally in on water fluoridation! This book is well referenced. Skanen144@yahoo.com. Fluoride Free Alaska

I give Paul Connett et al extreme kudos for their work on this book. There are a ton of resources to back up their argument against fluoridating the water supply. I would say this is one of those "must reads" if you want to get to the bottom of understanding what is best for our water supply. The argument for fluoridation of our water is almost completely laughable at this point. I think the only thing lacking in this work is solutions at the individual level (i.e. filtering options, distilled water vs natural spring water or possibly catching rainwater and filtering that etc etc.). Yeah, yeah, there needs to be political action at the local level (they do get into that) but we need to approach this from as many angles as humanly possible. This is our water for #$*! sake!!

The Case Against Fluoride is a well-researched response to the dangerous and out-dated practice of community water fluoridation (CWF). Dr. Connett, who has a PhD in Chemistry, offers a detailed analysis about the toxicity of fluoride and its negative effects to the human body when we ingest this toxin by adding it to our drinking water. This book builds a meticulous case against CWF and offers 81 pages of references to back up every single fact. Here is a sampling of some of the points that Dr. Connett makes in his Review and Conclusion chapter:- "Fluoridation is a very bad medical practice. Once fluoride has been added to the public water supply, there can be no control over the dose people receive or who receives it."- "Fluoridation defies medical ethics. When communities fluoridate their water, they are doing to the whole community what an individual doctor is not allowed to do to anyone: prescribe medication without the individual's informed consent."- "Fluoridation defies common sense. With leading proponents of fluoridation admitting that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical and not systemic, the practice of forcing people to ingest fluoride has become even more absurd."- "The FDA has never approved fluoride for ingestion."- "Fluoride has never been subjected to rigorous, randomized clinical trials."- "US children are being overexposed to fluoride. Thirty-two percent of American children in fluoridated areas now have dental fluorosis - visible damage to the tooth enamel indicating that a child has swallowed too much fluoride before the permanent teeth have erupted."- "Bones are not protected from lifelong exposure. About 50 percent of the fluoride we ingest each day concentrates in our bones and accumulates there. Governments promoting fluoridation have not done enough to demonstrate that such accumulation does not contribute to arthritic symptoms and bone fractures."- "Fluoridation continues because its promoters have power and prestige."- "Endorsements don't constitute scientific enquiry. Instead of scientific enquiry, promoters of fluoridation use a long list of endorsements from associations and agencies that parrot one another and rarely present supporting data from the primary scientific literature."In "The Case Against Fluoride", Dr. Connett elaborates (and references) on all of the above points.. and offers even more information about CWF and its negative effects. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in gaining actual knowledge about the practice of fluoridating our water. It's also a must read for people interested in healthy living and attaining pure and clean water for each and every community in the United States by stopping this out-dated practice immediately.

Professor Connett et al have tied together all the evidence from the latest published peer-reviewed studies showing the harm to health of chronic ingestion of fluoride from various sources (the main one being water fluoridation). Governments and water authorities can no longer ignore the weight of this scientific evidence and must now call for the end of the archaic and polluting practice of water fluoridation. The book is a well written, well referenced expose... A must to read!

this book, along with various talks and presentations by Dr. Connett available on YouTube, gave me the factual chops and historical background on this bizarre practice to effectively discuss it with the public and our elected officials.
