It combines 3 decades of first hand knowledge and experience from an author clearly devoted to continually seeking and refining his own hard mastered skill set.The information offered in the bow building process has been distilled down to its most efficient mechanisms and laid out in an easily discernible, linear format complete with pictures illustrating each step along the way.Details are offered concerning everything from selecting wood types and the variances among them to the tools used and the subtleties in using them, different bow types as well as string and arrow making. There is even a substantial chapter on takedown or 2-piece design.I can't imagine too many hands raised with follow-up questions after this class. Terrific book. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in bow building or just a curiosity into the appeal of traditional archery.
Great book for getting started making selfbows. It goes into detail sufficiently to give confidence to the new bowyer. It's an easy read and helped me greatly. Couple this with Clay's youtube videos and you get a very powerful combination. Buy this book.
I bought this book recently and took it on vacation with me. I read it through once and some parts twice. Clay covers all aspects of bow making in the book. The book reinforces what he has said on his bow making videos and puts it in print where you can refer back to it when questions arise. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in making a bow.
This handbook is an excellent resource especially for someone wanting to craft a bow. I’ve read a fair number of books including the ‘bible’ volumes and I still feel that Mr. Hayes’ book is great. I think it would have been more helpful if I had read this before I read the other books. Not to disparage the others, but this one is an easy read and very accessible. His website is also helpful with all the video tutorials.
Great book. Clay covers a lot of different woods for bow building and what style of bow is best for different woods. I am looking forward to getting started.
It was well done, I couldn’t spot errors,it was easy to understand.But given it was not a multi volume work there were omissions and brevity in some areas of my interest .A good value if you are just now thinking about subject and might look futher
Great book on bow building, the added parts on string making and arrows was a bonus.
Well I am only part way through the book. First couple chapters actually. I have identified the trees on my property, harvested 3 different species and have split my first staves. I need to seal the ends and wait for a few months, then I can use the draw bench that I recently built. Good reading. Well presented.
