The command to count the days up to Pentecost/Shavuot is found in Leviticus 23. It is a period of time after Passover that is overlooked if you only know about Pentecost from the book of Acts. This counting was an unknown verse/command/instruction for so many years to me and my family. Now that we are looking into the roots of our faith in Yeshua/Jesus, many previously unknown verses are coming to life in an exciting way!! This book--Counting The Omer has more information packed into it's pages than just devotional help. There is history, inspiration, Biblical interpretation and is just an enjoyable guide to a great discipline in obedience to our Creator. I used the Kindle version; next year I will use a book in hand as I like to underline and highlight. This is a recommended book--get your copy and see what you are missing!!

This is the only devotional I found for Messsianic believers to count the omer. His daily lessons could each be a Bible study and I was often intrigued by them, delving more into God's word. For my first season of counting the over, it was an enriching and inspiring. The only thing I would say is that he is quite wordy where fewer words could do. His preface and index of special research of counting the omer and fixing holidays was heady- enough there to satisfy the most curious reader.

I have been doing daily devotionals for years, and this "Counting the Omer" devotional has been the most faith-deepening, spiritually awakening devotional book that I have ever found. YHVH is truly using William Mark Huey as an instrument for His voice. He speaks to all walks of life.As someone who is not a new believer, but fairly new to Messianic ways, I found this book to be profoundly educational in the ways of YHVH, especially for someone raised in the man-made myths of organized religion. I am excited to use this same devotional for years to come, and I'm sure that YHVH will present new things to me each year.

Really useful for counting Omer this year. My favorite, all of the Bible that was used. Makes sense to meditate on the Word of God while counting the Omer. I think that is very first century Christianity/faith.

I found this book last year. I was fairly new to the idea of keeping the feasts and really had little idea about Counting the Omer. I had used their Messianic Spring Helper book to learn about Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread and this book was recommended by Outreach Israel Ministries so I downloaded the sample. Within minutes of opening up the sample, I knew that this book would be a real blessing. I could not have been more right!!It all started to come together! Mainstream Christianity has lost so much in replacing God's appointed times with their own "holy days". This morning, as I read Day 3, I pondered how wonderful it was to know that Yeshua was with His disciples for 40 of the 50 days of Counting the Omer and how they were able to draw close in worship and gratefulness to their Risen Savior and that this book has helped me to do the same! I highly recommend the book, whether you are on a messianic journey or simply want to draw closer to the Messiah!

Just got this book for this time of the counting of the Omer. So far really enjoying it. A great book. Got Psalm reading for everyday with notes and application each day of the counting. A daily devotion toward Shavuot. A good buy.

I loved this book during counting the days of the Omer.

A great set of devotionals to help you stay focused bewteen Passover and Pentecost.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Montessori. I would also recommend sharing this book with curious friends and family first before "Montessori From the Start". "The Joyful Child" has a lighter tone and its a shorter overview of the Montessori method for very young children, while "Montessori From the Start" can be a bit heavy and rambly at times.

a super accessible and beautifully illustrated introduction to montessori infant years. As a Montessorian for over 30 years i believe every new parent should read this book and pass it along to family members, friends and caregivers.can’t praise it highly enough!

I care for two granddaughters under the age of three and was looking for a book to give me information on understanding and enhancing child development at that age. This book offered plenty of information and ideas for age appropriate toys and activities. I highly recommend it.

Excellent book giving an overview of Montessori for 0-3 year old children. I chose to read this first over Montessori From the Start because the chapters were shorter and easier to read while Montessori From the Start is a more detailed read. I recommend this as a good introduction to Montessori for those that just had a baby or are about to.

Must have book for all new parents, even if you aren't interested in Montessori per se (but you likely will be after reading this book). It's an essential in my library!

Such a wonderful, well-written and informative book about Montessori and how to best parent in the first 3 years of life! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone interested in the Montessori approach, beginners and more experienced!

I bought this in preparation for my first grandchild. I like the concepts and practices of Montessori. The book gave me some direction on how to set up and equip the playroom in my home.

I was expecting a description of a Montessori-inspired environment for young children. This book is more of an authoritative guide on child-rearing using a Montessori approach. It reads like a parenting manual from the 1970's. It also includes a descriptive study of child-rearing practices in Bhutan. It's a sweet book and has good ideas for child-rearing, however it is based on philosophy and not on science. Recommendations for diet, sleep, weaning, etc. are based on more colloquial observations. If I was a new mother I probably would find it somewhat reassuring in validating my own instincts in providing care and comfort for my child. I like the philosophy, though it is surprisingly authoritative in the absence of scientific evidence. I also would have liked more information on a shared environment like a school setting.

Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker RhodesI just completed Jewell Parker Rhodes' latest book--her first written for youngpeople. Its Title--Ninth Ward. Its Setting--New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Its focus--Lanesha, a twelve year old born with a caul covering her head andface, who is connected to the spiritual world and her Mama Ya Ya. Through achild's eyes we watch a neighborhood in the Ninth Ward of New Orleansexperience the arrival of Hurricane Katrina, the surge of the Mississippi River asthe levees give way, the destruction of a rich vibrant community made up ofpeople who have so little, but share what they have with each other. This is astory of love, courage and strength as the ancestors encourage two youngchildren to have faith in themselves if they want to survive. Jewell ParkerRhodes says that she wanted to grow up enough to write her first book for youngpeople--she has more than made up for making us wait so long by penning thismagnificent story for youngsters and oldsters, one that I will share with many. AMUST READ.

See above for full synopsis. Lanesha is a 12 year-old girl raised by the mid-wife who helped birth her as her mom died shortly after she was born. The first part of the book describes the love and affection between Mama Ya-Ya and and lets us know that between Mama Ya-Ya's educating Lanesha and school Lanesha is a very smart girl. Lanesha sees ghosts (including her mother) and Mama Ya-Ya sees and feels things gives the book a sort of mystical quality. The rest of the book deals with getting prepared for Hurricane Katrina and how Lanesha manages to survive the horrific storm. If I was in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina I would have liked to be with Lanesha. She draws on everything she has learned from math to physics to cooking. Her love for Mama Ya-Ya and her feelings for her friend TaShon and their dog Spot would make anyone want to be on her team. The images of the New Orleans destruction are vivid and heart wrenching but still this book is a wonderful book for youngsters. Lanesha is a strong female character and I for one would love to hear more of her story.Recommended for strong 3rd grade readers and above.

This was a phenomenal book. I read it to my 9 & 6 year old. We laughed and we cried, all while being overcome with joy and sadness. I won't ruin it, but we look forward to seeing what else this author has to offer. It's great for children of all ages. We talked about hurricane Katrina before we started the book so that the kids would have an understanding of the authors point of view. It was definitely worth the money. The fast shipping was a plus. Would put 10 stars if I could.

Ninth Ward was just okay to me. Yes, it was dramatic and a scary retelling of Hurricane Katrina told by a young girl, but that's all it was to me. I couldn't find myself really getting into the story or relating to the characters. The writing isn't horrible, but it is very young so prepare yourself for that. Or use it for an appropriate age.I had to read this for school and that's all it was to me unfortunately.

Ninth Ward is a wonderful story of surviving Hurricane Katrina. Lanesha has spent every day of her twelve years in her very nurturing close knit neighborhood of New Orleans' ninth ward. Her wise elderly foster mother has taught her the traditions, beliefs and superstitions of her African and French ancestors. These teachings are what give Lanesha the strength to save herself, her best friend and their dog after the flood wipes out the neighborhood. This is a story of faith, love and determination. It will be on all of the best books lists for sure.

As a mother and highly Spiritual BEING I am truly touched and strengthened by the Courage, Love and Wisdom of the characters. The determination and Will to Live. The present moment vividness of the story, captured my attention and expanded my heart. I could visually see Lanesha and TaShon, Mamma Ya Ya and the Ghosts. In fact the story is written so well I felt like I was right there in the story with the characters. I purchased this book for my daughter a few months ago and I don't believe she's read it yet. She's 7. Recently I was using her kindle for a meditation and I stumbled upon a book suggestion that seemed an interesting read. I tried purchasing the book but was unable to complete the purchase because of poor Internet connection. When I hit the back button it brought up a list of books in her library. This one caught my eye and I decided to skim through the book to see what the storyline was about. What was suppose to be me reading a few pages turned into me being fully engaged and motivated to read for the next discovery. I finished the book in 2 days and was immediately intrigued with the vocabulary and mathematical lessons presented on top of the other lessons of unity, endurance, strength, openness, wit, spirituality, Love, and Faith! So again, Thank You Dear Soul for your gift of word and creativity. Continued Blessings of SuccessBE...WellOmena El Proud Mamma to Azza Bee

My Sisters the Saints: A Spiritual Memoir, by Colleen Carroll Campbell

Review

“A beautiful and inspiring story of a woman’s deep faith and the saints who became her sisters along the path to her answered prayers.” – Mary Higgins Clark, worldwide bestselling novelist “Colleen Carroll Campbell has encountered most of the challenges confronting young women today—balancing dating, courtship, and marriage with a successful career, caring for a parent with Alzheimer’s, dealing with infertility—but she hasn’t faced these challenges alone. In My Sisters the Saints, Campbell introduces us to the women who helped her along the way – women like Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux, Edith Stein, and, of course, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Completely contemporary and totally timeless, My Sisters the Saints is an engaging spiritual memoir and the perfect guidebook for anyone who is looking for a companion to help her navigate life’s sometimes difficult and confusing journey.” – Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York “In this fascinating memoir, Colleen Carroll Campbell recounts her discovery of kinship with six great women saints at crucial junctures on her journey through life. My Sisters the Saints is the story of how a thoroughly modern woman drew inspiration and strength from her spiritual ‘sisters’ while struggling with the mysteries of life, love, illness, and death in today’s world. This lovely and highly readable book will touch many lives.”
- Mary Ann Glendon, former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Harvard Law professor, and President of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences
“Fully alive, authentically feminine, making a serious contribution to culture—and faithfully Catholic? In the minds of many still, an unlikely combination, at best. In My Sisters the Saints, Colleen Carroll Campbell recounts her own life’s story and the poignant struggles she encounters in fulfilling her dreams as an author, journalist, cultural commentator and woman. Campbell’s stories will resonate in the heart of every woman challenged by today’s culture and blessed with even a scintilla of faith. You won’t put this book down until you have finished the last page. And as you read, you will hold your breath in hopefulness experiencing with Colleen the grippingly real decisions in this woman’s life—both big and small—the response to which ultimately define who one is as a person. … Thank you, Colleen, for the courage to tell your own story. It makes an important and unique contribution to the lives of women by giving flesh to the beauty, meaning, and the purposes of human life and human love lived open to the mystery of God.” – Mother Agnes Mary Donovan, S.V., Superior General, Sisters of Life “Colleen Carroll Campbell is one of the finest writers on the American Catholic scene, and My Sisters the Saints shows her heart, her skill, and her keen intelligence at their best. This is a wonderful, engaging personal memoir and a great witness of faith.” – Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia “This book is a powerful description of the long struggle Colleen Carroll Campbell had to undergo to go back to peace, to give God the place that belongs to Him: the first. The lesson she learned is not to be forgotten: When in need, let us remember that we have brothers and sisters in heaven whose lives and sufferings teach the way to peace.” – Alice von Hildebrand, author of The Privilege of Being a Woman and The Soul of a Lion: The Life of Dietrich von Hildebrand  “Colleen Carroll Campbell is a genuine icon of the ‘new feminism’ called for by Blessed John Paul II. She has been on a long journey in search of the true meaning of women’s liberation and in My Sisters the Saints she tells the story of how six women mystics and her own personal trials and triumphs have helped her find that liberation at the foot of the cross. Refreshing, well written, down to earth, and a joy to read (I’d often find myself grinning as I read it), Colleen has given us a sincere gift: not only the gift of her intellect and skill as a writer, but, more importantly, she has opened her heart and given us the sincere gift of herself. Stop wondering whether you should read this book. You should!” – Christopher West, author of At The Heart of the Gospel and fellow at the Theology of the Body Institute  “In My Sisters the Saints, Colleen Carroll Campbell shows how in our attentiveness to the saints we learn not only about the Lord and the way of life he imparts, but also how we discern the most important truths about who we are and the purpose for which we have been created. My Sisters the Saints brilliantly illuminates how the Christian life cannot be understood as an abstraction, but shows its radiant form in our friendship with heavenly companions who meet us in the real events and concrete circumstances of our lives.” – Father Robert Barron, author and host, Catholicism and founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries “In My Sisters the Saints, Colleen Carroll Campbell has liberated these great historical heroines from dusty altarpieces and stone effigies and has brought them into the new millennium. Through her literary portraits, they become sure-footed guides through the modern day spiritual minefield of the ‘hook-up’ culture, the difficulties of commitment and family, and the ever-present reality of suffering and loss. By the end, one finds oneself with six new girlfriends whose wit, common sense and faith transcend any age.” – Elizabeth Lev, art historian and author of The Tigress of Forli  “From her own life’s story, Colleen Carroll Campbell has depicted a spiritual journey marked by waiting for and letting go. She learns of motherhood, both spiritual and biological, from the holy women whose lives reflect her own journey back to her. Her personal story teaches a universal lesson: living free is different from being in control. This is a moving and beautiful book.” – Cardinal Francis George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago  “The saints undo the world—for by their sheer existence, they tell us we may have gotten it wrong: all our conventions, all our agreements, all our correctnesses and easy thoughts no help when things come crashing in. In troubled times, Colleen Carroll Campbell found herself by reading the lives of the great women saints. And you might find your own self, reading Campbell’s My Sisters the Saints." – Joseph Bottum, author of The Christmas Plains and former editor of First Things
“With this intimate memoir, Colleen Carroll Campbell gives a moving witness to the ‘cloud of witnesses’ celebrated in sacred scripture.” – Dawn Eden, author of My Peace I Give You and The Thrill of the Chaste “This is an inspiring and insightful account of one young woman’s journey through the challenges of contemporary culture, the ups and downs of life, and her encounter with the wisdom of the saints. This is the story of a journey told with refreshing honesty and great insight that will benefit many.” – Ralph Martin, author of The Fulfillment of All Desire and president of Renewal Ministries “St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Campbell (The New Faithful: Why Young Adults Are Embracing Christian Orthodoxy, 2002) relates a provocative life story centered on her experiences as a woman in the Catholic Church. Intertwined with the author’s tale is her autobiography as a reader, her experiences with books by and about various saints who have deeply influenced every aspect of her life. … Throughout the book, Campbell describes how various women saints helped her understand her situation and move ahead. … A charming and instructive communion with saintly sisters.” – Kirkus Reviews

This book is Campbell's memoir of her spiritual journey and about the six women saints who have become her patronesses and closest friends. She intertwines the stories of these women saints with her own story, telling the reader how they have given her hope, guidance, and strength on her own spiritual journey. To begin, I have to say that I think this book hit me personally very strongly, as some of her own struggles are struggles that I share--particularly a father with Alzheimers. Because of this connection, I found myself reading Campbell's memoirs with a box of tissues sitting next to me, taking short breaks when my eyes were so filled with tears that I couldn't see the page. For me, hearing how she found comfort in Therese of Lisieux's similar experiences of a father with dimensia were personally helpful and I will take her thoughts and shared experiences to prayer.I also related to much of what Campbell writes in a professional way. Her memories of college life correspond well with my experiences as a college campus minister. She writes that for her it seemed "better to be labeled shallow, stuck-up, drunk, or debauched--anything but devout" (page 22). If you have encountered this and struggled with it or been mystified by it, then I think this book is for you.At the very beginning of the text, Campbell sets the stage by telling about an experience she had in college where she looked around her and asked the same question I see many of my students asking themselves, "Is this it? Is this all there is?" She walked away in hopes of finding a satisfactory answer. I think that this book is an answer and it is one that can help readers move forward in their own spiritual lives. I think that readers who have had similar experiences to her, whether it is an exact experience, such as a father who struggles with Alzheimer's, or simply the wider experience of trying to determine what it means to be free in a world bound by the chains of sin or to be feminine in a society that seems to stand against femininity (both themes continued throughout the book), will find in Campbell's memoirs a story of hope and also an idea for how to move forward in their own lives. As a spiritual memoir, Campbell's writing is insightful and prayerful, a good book to read when you are in your own moment of questioning. As a book, Campbell's writing is clear and alive. She truly captures the reader, inviting them to walk with her as she tells her story and also those of the women saints--Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux, Faustina, Edith Stein, Mother Teresa, and Mary, Mother of God. The parallels that she draws between her own life and those of the saints are insightful. The lessons she learns are encouraging. And throughout she brings to life for the reader the many characters of her tale--her mother and father, husband, and friends--in such a way that the reader is bound to love them as she does.I highly recommend this book.

I can't recommend this book enough. In fact, I bought copies for several priests I know because I believe it will enable them to help people who suffer in various ways, especially with loved ones who are sick, and couples wanting to live out their Catholic life faithfully, even through painful circumstances.Colleen Carroll Campbell takes us on a journey that encounters many of the challenges of ordinary life for Christians. She shows her less virtuous attitudes and imperfections along the way only to later reveal God-pleasing changes. Her life and those early attitudes likely mirror thoughts held by many who did not fully grasp the beauty of the Catholic faith.Looking at the lives of six women known for their heroic virtue, Colleen shines a light on how each influenced her choices in life (St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Edith Stein, Mother Teresa, St. Faustina, and the Mary of Nazareth). She is painfully honest at times and in ways to which I could totally relate, even discussing some of her initial apprehensions about certain saints. As the book unfolds, her understanding of those saints, and what made them stand out, blossoms in ways that she can work to apply that understanding. While my own mother did not suffer the same illness as did her father, I regretted not having, "My Sisters the Saints" years ago. It would have helped me to cope better with the challenges that I was faced with during those times, and to see God's grace at work in shaping me through them. Many times I ended up in the confessional, feeling confused, guilty, and helpless. For this reason, I strongly recommend this book as a "must read" for all Confessors and spiritual directors. Copies of the book should be kept at the parish for borrowing and purchase.Men should not be intimidated by the feminine appearance. Never judge a book by it's cover, as the saying goes. This book teaches us how to be guided by the lives of the saints."My Sisters the Saints," gripped me from beginning to end, making it difficult to set aside. It took me on an emotional roller-coaster ride with Colleen, despite the fact that these were ordinary challenges faced often by ordinary people. In the end, I was left feeling a sense of hope and triumph, and given a renewed sense of vigilance to make faith-based choices to please God above all others, including myself.

This goes down as one of my favourite reads of 2014. Spiritual memoirs abound these days, but this one stands out for a couple of reasons.First, this is not self-centred writing in any sense. She relays her experiences in simple narration. She deals with love, the slow loss of a parent, the ups and downs of trying to have children, and she never narrows in on herself. (And it just too easy to do just that when doing this kind of writing.)Second, it's a well written story of a modern woman connecting her life to six female saints: Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux, Faustina of Poland, Edith Stein of Germany, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Mary of Nazareth. Their lives relate to her deepest longings, guide her through some difficult decisions, and lead her to rethink nearly everything she thought she knew about what it means to be a liberated woman in the twenty-first century. For someone who is not a Catholic, I don't understand the prayers to Mary that I have often heard when attending mass with my mother. I appreciated her explanation of why Mary is so revered in the Catholic tradition, even if I don't agree with it.Another aspect of the book that I enjoyed is her quest to understand the meaning of her life and identity in light of her faith and contemporary feminism. I love the wrestling she does with the dilemmas of her generation: confusion over the sexual chaos of the hookup culture, tension between her duelling desires for professional success and committed love, ambivalence about the demands of marriage and motherhood, and anguish at her father's descent into dementia and her own infertility. This is a gem that would be great to share at a book club with mothers and daughters. Lots to discuss.
