How in the world did I not come across this series until now, what book abyss have I fallen in that this gem of a writing masterpiece has been hidden from me!?The best kinds of books are the ones that, when you read them, you feel like you’re whisked off to another place, the world around you disappears and for awhile you lose yourself in the stories of these other people. You become part of their adventures, their struggles and triumphs. Yet all the while these people feel like people you know, people you’ve met, or even people you’ve been or might want to be. This book has all of those glorious elements in it! Reading Ember felt like disappearing into a place that’s recognizable and yet so completely foreign, horrible in its brutality and yet strangely beautiful in its mythology. And the characters, excuse me but they are so beyond amazing, words cannot express how much I adore all of them. Laia is the most relatable, her growth from being afraid and defenseless to finding her own kind of courage is remarkable. It’s great when a character doesn’t just instantly toughen up because they’re thrown into something difficult. Laia is strong, but her strength overall is a growing process and that made me admire her as a character. And don’t get me talking about Elias because my heart just might explode from how much I love that poor soul. Seriously his development was stellar and intricate, the way everything was woven together with the Augur Cain and seeing the many layers of himself that needed to revealed for him to be “free”, it was just too much for my heart. Now Helene, that girl is still so much of a mystery to me, but in a great way. I want to know more about her and she’s just awesome with being underestimated by everyone and I felt hurt for her after everything with Elias, but she just had such complexity that I can’t wait to find out more!!Even the side characters in this book were wonderful, like all of Elias and Helene’s Blackcliff friends, I almost cried with what happened to them in the end and Izzi is just the cutest little cupcake after everything that the Commandant has done to her. Who, speaking of, is so the creepiest and worst woman ever. There’s no way I could choose a worst villain of this story, because between Marcus being a super sicko and Keris as the Commandant with her sadistic ways, they were both equally horrid, but in a “I like to dislike you” way.As romance goes, I’m not super thrilled with the love triangle because, let’s be honest here, I’m all for Laia and Elias and so I was saying no to Keenan early on. Plus his character just wasn’t developed as much as Elias so I didn’t feel as interested in the romance between Laia and him as I did with her and Elias. Now I will admit I still wouldn’t be opposed to a triangle between Elias, Laia and Helene. Elias may have been very clueless there for awhile, but I think his affection for Helene was really genuine and I always adore a good friends turned romantic partners pairing. Of course with everything that happened that’s probably not likely. Especially since Elias and Laia have some serious book chemistry. The kind where even when they’re just on the same page together, or even just mention the other’s name, I’m so glued to the page my eyes hurt. The author has managed to capture that all important spark and I just can’t wait for it to ignite into something extraordinary.I’ve already rambled on too much, but I have to mention how well the world was built too. Not just how much I felt immersed in it, like I said above, but just the style of it. Like being plopped down in Ancient Rome, but with a touch of Arabian culture. The mythology of the jinn, efrits, ghuls and other creatures is so intriguing that I’m pulled in by their story as much as the main characters. The author has a talent for weaving stories within stories, within stories and I liked that while the narrative had one overarching goal, Laia saving her brother, there were so many more complex narratives going on underneath. It gave the book more drive, heart and depth. I’m always completely drawn in by the complexity it must take to come up with not just the original plot, but the stories of so many other moving pieces within the original narrative. So after all of that, if you’ve read all the way to the bottom of this review (which if you have, thank you and you’re awesome) I think you can surmise by now that I LOVED this book. The characters, the world, the everything. The writing was so well done that every line and moment fit within the frame of what was happening. Stepping back I normally wouldn’t appreciate something that could be considered slightly violent, but within the world that Tahir has set up, it all works together to create a place that’s haunting and poetically moving at the same time. I can’t wait to start reading the next books in the series, if it’s anything like this one, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!

“An Ember in the Ashes,” Sabaa Tahir’s debut novel, depicts a brutal dystopian society where misery weaves its way into the lives of the oppressors and the oppressed. In 500 years of Martial rule, life is precarious for the Scholars and the other groups that are part of the Empire. The academic Scholars were conquered by the militant Martials because of the Martials’ superiority in making weapons of steel. Since then, the Scholars have resisted without success. However, one Scholar, Laia unwillingly becomes entrenched in the underground Resistance when her brother Darin is arrested by the Masks of the Empire, soldiers who are trained to be merciless.Although fearful and doubtful of her own strength, Laia plunges herself into the convoluted world of a naïve spy, just barely surviving as a slave in one life-threatening situation after another with her master, the Commandant. In the beginning of the novel, she states, “I wonder if this real. If it’s a nightmare. It’s real, Laia. Move.” This acceptance of reality is what propels her forward on her journey. Throughout the story, she progressively becomes braver and braver in her quest to save her brother.Literally, on the other side, is Elias, an unwilling mask who wants nothing more than to escape the Empire. Throughout his life, he witnesses the violence of the Empire and abhors it. All he wants is freedom. However, when the Empire’s oracles, the Augurs, thrust a contest upon him to become Emperor, he has to accept because he trusts the cryptic promise of freedom from one of them.Elias and Laia are drawn to each other because of the commonality they share as unwilling participants in the power plays of the Empire and the Resistance. Inevitably, this leads to a problematic romantic attraction between the two. At the same time, Laia has a growing attraction for Keenan, a member of the Resistance. Elias has yet another problematic relationship the form of Helene, who bears love for him in spite of herself and will make unexpected sacrifices in the name of that love.Through Laia and Helene, Tahir delicately interjects the motivation of love in a violent world. Laia’s love for her brother and Helene’s love for Elias propel many of their actions. Both willingly throw themselves in danger for love.Yet, looming in the background is the Commandant, a character who makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. No real mercy exists in this woman, not even towards her own son. Towards the end of the novel, we learn the regret of her life is the one time she shows mercy. While in many ways a compelling character, the Commandant is really one-note for most of the book whereas many of the other characters evolve.Despite that, Tahir’s novel is gripping and a must-read. The plot pulls you in from the beginning, and you must know what happens.

My title says it all. If you run Netware 6.5, then you simply must get this book. It is true that all of the information can be found in the Novell Guides but you will spend forever looking it up. The extent of this book's value to me can be seen by the fact that this is a replacement purchase. A bag containing the opriginal item was stolen some weeks ago and within two weeks I had to order a replacement. Thank God it was still available.

With over 500 pages and several detailed appendixes the "NetWare 6.5 Administrator's Handbook" covers pretty much everything an administrator will need to know. Each chapter starts with a section called "Instant Access" where you will find a short summary of the information in the chapter. If you are familiar with the basics of the information but just can't quite seem to remember the specific command or specific steps to do something you can quickly get up to speed in this section without browsing through the whole chapter.I was somewhat surprised to find that the section on upgrading still contains information on upgrading from the old version 3 bindery system. These days it is pretty unusual to find a version before 4.x but it is nice that he includes the version 3 upgrade information. I was also glad to see a good discussion on planning the eDirectory. This is an area where most books on Novell administration have fallen short. An eDirectory tree that is poorly planned is difficult to manage well as users are added, new roles created, new departments or companies added, etc. Planning it correctly up front based on good principles makes all the difference later. The section on the eDirectory does a good job of putting the planner on the right track. For Novell administrators with prior experience the coverage of all the new Internet based utilities is excellent. ConsoleOne is covered in detail as well as some of the common snap-ins that make management through the eDirectory easier. Also covered well are the Internet based printing system iPrint, Internet and browser based storage via iSCSI, iFolder, NetStorage, and NetDrive, and other parts of the OneNet initiative. These tools make one of the easiest to administer, most secure, and stable networks available even easier to administer. (An opinion based on working with Novell since version 2, Microsoft from 3.0, and various Linux and Unix versions for the last six years. I've also taught all three of the server operating systems at the College level and installed many networks based on each system and mixes of them.)Finally, he covers the Apache web server for Novell including setup and configuration and the Tomcat Servlet Engine. He even includes a short section on MySQL, OpenSSH, Perl and PHP support in the Novell server environment. The book ends with several useful appendixes that include detailed client properties information, login scripts, console commands, and detailed information on the eDirectory (including errors and DSRepair information). The "NetWare 6.5 Administrator's Handbook" is highly recommended for anyone working in this environment and does an excellent job of not only providing the details you need to administer a Novell 6.5 network but also the theoretical background to understand exactly what is (or should be) happening.

ok.. so now you know what Mr. Gates thinks of this. He's obviously quaking. That is who wrote the other review wasn't it? As someone who grew up on Macs and Win16 boxes (after 8080's), I didn't run into Netware until my professional life. I didn't get it at first either. But over the years I have come to understand and appreciate what Netware can and does do - & do incredibly well. There is a good reason that the vast majority of the Fortune 500 use it - as do other mission critical environments like gov't & military & financial that care about things like security, stability and TCO. That said, (ahem), 6.5 is the best thing Provo has ever put out IMHO, and this book is one of the best ways to get clued into what it's about. I have 6.5 in production and have used Netware since 4.11 SFT3 so I know a little bit about it. Try native file access for Unix, Mac & Win32 hosts, unmatched file system security, great management tools, support for open source projects like PHP, Perl, Apache, mySQL, *real* java and directory services that frankly shame AD.. did I mention snapshot volumes or the remote office appliance? Free server licenses? Drives that don't need defragmenting? Clusters up to 32 nodes? But like any great product there is a lot to it & it's useless if you don't know how to work it - or don't know it's there! So buy the book, ok? :) Change is good.Meanwhile, pay no attention to the raving MCSE. They get like that after a while.

As you can see, Netware is like a good bottle of wine, it just keeps on getting better. From a technology standpoint, Netware is a level above the rest. When it comes to security, and "it just works", Netware 6.5 gives you the features that other vendors dream of. The new features are true money saving technologies, dont rip and replace like the other vendor wants you to do, use what you have and let it all work together. People get rich on the lack understanding of others. Take it from someone that has been in the business over 20 years. Novell will and has risen above the rest and already is the best of breed "per Gartner", leaders in most technologies. This book will prepare you for the ease of administration which you have earned.

The book arrived quickly, was in great shape and was just what I needed. I was able to get a book to help me with my job for much less. Win-win situation. I will definitely use this vendor again.

Executor's Guide, The: Settling a Loved One's Estate or Trust

Review

"Mary Randolph, an editor at Nolo, a publisher of do-it-yourself legal guides and author of "The Executor's Guide," says it is a good idea to get a lawyer to help unwind a trust, especially if it will hold a significant amount of money. Trust owners can take some steps on their own―for example, going to a bank to change ownership of a trust-owned bank account back into their names as individuals. But if the trust holds a business or another asset, that could be more complicated. "If you've got some money to spend on attorney fees―and most people who have created AB trusts do―it can save you a lot of trouble later, "Ms. Randolph says." Wall Street Journal"Covers the gamut of estate chores and helps you get through them." Kiplinger's Retirement Report"Explains how to find state-specific information, and an appendix sorts legalities by state." Miami Herald"Provides a guide for executors and trustees, describing legal procedures and terminology, what to expect, decisions that will need to be made, and questions to ask." Reference & Research Book News"The Executor's Guide [is] a super-detailed, step-by-step book that's a must-read." Beth Fenner, CNN "More Money" blog

Sadly I had to read this on my way down to a spare of the moment time. I was an executor and I had to know more about what the job meant and this book did a good job on informing me. Though I wish you had put "Probate" closer to the start of this book as I was confused on the many times you spoke about it during the book. I ended up reading it in way later chapters. This covers many things I had to deal with and was(is) a great source of information. Something every one should read before any issues arise in ones life, as it will help you to prepare the job before some one passes away. The book gives you knowledge in a lot of areas that would help you prevent headaches after loss. Such as ways to avoid "Probate". I do wish I had read this before hand. But it worked just as well after hand as well.Thank you for the book and your knowledge towards the subject.

I'm a 60 year old Paralegal. I have been a Certified Paralegal since 1988. Often times I need to refresh what I learned in school. This book, among other legal books I purchased on Amazon, were great for re-learning or refreshing my memory. I learn a lot of new things. I often refer my clients to buy this book online at Amazon. It's a great step-by-step book for when a family member dies. The first chapters tells you what to do the first week after the decedent passed, then the next chapters cover what to do in the following weeks and months. It's great for someone grieving and needing some initial guidance on what to do. It covers setting up file folders for bills that start to come in and needing to be paid. It covers what an Executor is suppose to do and when. Must have this book on your shelf at home. This book is good for ANY State. Nolo Books are great in general. Please purchase any legal book pertaining to your STATE. I live in Texas, so these TEXAS legal books were helpful. The ones on Estate Planning and Texas Probate are great for a family to have on their home book shelves. You can refer to them when have your Will prepared, or if anyone in your family passes and asks you to be the Executor of the Estate. Everyone should know about PROBATE, it means "To Prove Up" the Estate (or Will) and it's Assets, and in a court of law. Whether you have a Will, a Trust or No Will or Trust, an Estate must be probated in some way. You can "google" Texas Probate or for any state that you live in, and read up on it. Everyone who passes away, their Estate must be probated. Even individuals who have a Revocable Family Trust, which is often created to "avoid" probate, often has to go through probate anyway because they did not keep their Trust current. An attorney can explain. Yes, you will like this book. Jennifer in Houston, Texas.

Have only read excerpts from this book so far,but it has already helped me immensely. I felt lost and overwhelmed by the task of being Executor, but the book reduced it to human scale and laid a series of small, achievable tasks, Right off the bat, learned that the Estate was considered "small" and therefore qualified for a simplified probate process. That alone justified the purchase price!

My father in law died recently with a rather small and relatively uncomplicated Will, so my husband, who was named as the Executor, decided to try and Probate the Will without the use of a lawyer. That meant I would be the one handling all the work. I was a little worried, so I bought this book and read it before I agreed to undertake the task. (A really nice Amazon feature was that I was able to buy an add-on copy of the book in Kindle form for only an additional $2.99 so I was able to start reading it immediately.) The book was fabulous and gave me all the tools, and, therefore, the confidence to act on my own. I learned so much about the process of Estate Probating that I believe anyone with a few organizational skills (and a great deal of time and patience) can Probate a simple Will without a lawyer. Of course, I must warn you that this Estate had no outstanding debts, no real estate and only some IRA's, some cash accounts and a checking account. Moreover, I am not sure I will be able to do the Estate taxes or the final Income Tax when the time comes for that. so, I may need to hire a Tax Accountant for that part, although I have done my own taxes for over 40 years using paper and pencil, then Turbo Tax when that was invented. In sum, this is a great book.

My dad.s estate attorney quite honestly was nice, but not very helpful. I'm almost finished with my dads estate-it has been over a year since he passed. Due to family circumstances I was required to change from an agreed to supervised estate to unsupervised estate. If it wasn't for this book, I would not have known what needed to go to probate and what could be excluded. I made the personal inventory list as requested by the attorney-her fee is based on size of the estate. After I read the book, I realized that a good chunk of funds should not be included on the list based on how my dad set up a few accounts. I mentioned it to the attorney and we took it off the list going to be filed in court. I was a little annoyed about that and made sure I read ALL of the chapters that applied to us. Also explains tax forms that need to be filed for estate and deceased family member. I'm very lucky I knew where most of my dads paperwork was for items and passwords after he died. Even though I hope to live a long time, I'm going to get the NOLO book on organizing your affairs for my executor.

Being an executor is EXTREMELY difficult and complex. We could not have managed the trust/will requirements without this EXCELLENT, well-written, thorough resource. Even when using an attorney to navigate the maze, this book provides detailed, easy-to-follow explanations for what to expect, and how to be better organized. We have purchased several revised editions as the years have passed - we absolutely would NOT be without this resource. We recommend Nolo Press books on any topic to our friends.
