As a die-hard fan of Route 66, I have read and devoured many books trying to get from one town to the next without getting lost (which everyone does at least once!!). This book is the only one you will need when crossing Oklahoma on Rt 66. I wish more were like this for each state, I would own the whole set!! A definite "must-have" for 66 roadies.

One simply cannot find a better written Route 66 book than this one. If you think you're going to travel the Route in Oklahoma, don't do it without this book. Even if you're just passing though OK on a longer 66 trip.This book is SO complete, the Oklahoma Highway Dept uses parts of it for their website section on Route 66. What's that tell ya? (See: [...])You'll want something like the excellent "Route 66: EZ66 Guide for Travelers" by Jerry McClanahan for travelling the rest of Route 66, but while in OK, you'll put that down and use this book. Trust me. If you explored every single alignment and all the "ghost 66" sections listed herein, you could spend a week on 66 just in OK. Even if you're just doing a less "investigative" trip, you'll learn more from this book than any other.I got to meet the author on my recent Route 66 trip, and he is a great guy, just overflowing with info about and obvious passion for Route 66. (He even lives on an old alignment of Route 66, in a house that looks like an old cottage-style Phillips 66 station!)Get this book, you will not regret it.

Michael Wallis, one of the foremost authorities on Route 66 today, has given Jim Ross the title "Pathfinder of the Mother Road" in his introduction to Ross' "Oklahoma Route 66." The title is well-deserved, as proven by Ross's careful exploration of Route 66 in his home state for this 75th anniversary year of the Road.The photos are a wonderful sampling from all the decades of the Road's life, right up to the year 2000. Ross pays tribute to the many persons and places who have made Oklahoma unique among the states through which it passes: Cyrus Avery, the "Father of the Mother Road," Jack "Mr. 66" Cuthbert, who worked hard to promote 66 when the interstates threatened it, Lucille Hamons, the "Mother of the Mother Road" and icon of the roadside businessperson, and many others. His closing paragraphs express a genuine love for the Road and a true appreciation for its continuing place in our culture.To say the least, it is an absolute must for anyone who has a serious interest in the Mother Road.

Oklahoma's own Jim Ross has written a masterful book on America's Main Street. The book combines maps that are clean and easy to follow, numerous vintage images of photos and postcards that enhance the enjoyment of the book, and information about the people and places along the way. He even has included historical information about how the road came about. Anyone interested in history or in finding the road in Oklahoma (including every known alignment) will want to have this book. This is a book the novice as well as the seasoned veteran roadie will enjoy!

As an historic highway researcher and writer myself, I was greatly impressed with Oklahoma Route 66 by Jim Ross. Jim provides so much detailed information on following the Mother Road through Oklahoma that not a single scrap of any alignment has been left to anyone's imagination, right down to the original dirt roads used in 1926 and the interiim strips of asphalt laid down to connect the old road to sections of new interstate highway being constructed in the 1950s.For die-hards like me who want to know each and every place the old road went, this book is a dream. The maps are concise and easy to read. The photos are crisp and plentiful. Just what I expected from the man who, along with Jerry McClanahan, brought us the Bones of the Old Road video and Route 66: The Map Series. Fun to read and to use, this book's a keeper.

Critiques of this book notwithstanding, this is a classic text for archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, and those interested in the history of early settlement in the US. The models Deetz proposes for understanding anything from architecture to graves present a fascinating means of the numerous data presented here and even when stretched too thin, his concepts are still rather compelling and completely enthralling. His writing is part of what makes his books especially enjoyable. He is a neat thinker and an accessible writer. This book offers a great way of accessing the world of things within an historical context.

I enjoyed Deetz' newly updated introduction to Historical Archaeology in America. He makes clear that much can be gleaned from the seemingly insignificant material things that are left behind in the process of living. I greatly enjoyed his putting the pieces of the puzzles together. Sometimes the result was an interesting surprise. For instance, I didn't know that porches, which became so popular in America, were not a feature of European houses and were introduced by Africans. "Shotgun houses" also have African roots. Another surprising story is told by the changing styles of Colonial gravestones. They change subtly as the religious climate changes. The oldest being very stiff and stern and later ones becoming more decorative, replacing deaths heads with angels.

First, I have always enjoyed the writings of Jim Deetz. His work was innovative and opened doors to new ways of looking at the past. Second, this book is a little treasure that deserved to be reprinted. And, finally, anyone interested in the past will find this book of interest and it will cause them to think differently about our past.

Read this book in college, got the newer edition, which has some interesting added bits. Highly recommend.

I especially liked the portion about the individuals and the information gained through excavation of their remains. Excavation of the bldgs. and the town was interesting, but the individuals were who made their world go round.

This book is very approachable and uses simple language to describe complex issues and topics surrounding history. Buy this book if you want to know more about how objects shape the lives of people throughout history.

Surprisingly, this is a very good book. I'm about halfway through it, and I've already gotten more than my money's worth. Think of this book as a primer to learning SQL Server. Instead of covering every topic in full depth, listing every possible option no matter how obscure, it covers the most useful ones with concise examples and explanations of what's happening each step of the way. A good example is the chapter on Active Server Pages. I had never created an Active Server Page. Yet, about 2 or 3 hours after starting the book, I had created my first one. And with the explanations given, it was easy for me to change some of the code and understand why it did, or didn't, work. If you've never used SQL Server before, want a good intro to it, and often start off your thoughts with the phrase, "I wonder what would happen if I change this...", then this will be a good book for you.

I needed a quick way to get exposed to the basics of SQL Server 7.0 due to the nature of my most recent job. Therefore I spent some time shopping, looking for the options that would allow me to achieve this. Price was not my main concern, yet William Robinson's book from the '10 minutes' series by Sams, gave quick answers to most of my questions, in a very nicely structured way: in lessons you can digest 10 minutes at a time. Major drawbacks: it refers too often to a Database you might not have installed in your machine (i.e. if you're reading the book at home in order to apply the acquired knowledge at work), PLUS there is an unnecessary sidetrack in lessons 4-8 (in my opinion). If you're using SQL Server, I don't think you'll be using it as much to interact with Word or Excel. Yet you can easily skip these lessons and the flow will not be affected significantly. Overall, I give it 4.5 stars.

SQL Server is a vast subject. I was sure a '10 Minute' book couldn't be worth anybody's time or money. But as it turns out, it's just because this book doesn't drown you in details, that it fills an urgent need for an approachable beginner's book.This book gives you the framework and practical understanding so that when you move on to other more detailed tomes you'll know where those details fit in.I'll be teaching both SQL Server 7 certification classes next semester and I intend to recommend this book to my students. It's a great place to start! (an the price ain't bad either ;-)

This is a great introductory book to Microsoft SQL Server 7 (and even SQL Server 2000). The 10 minute tag is a little unrealistic and smells of marketing. However, if you need a quick resource on writing SQL queries then this an excellent book. This book actually lives up to its name. It gives a fast and relatively painless explanation of SQL Server 7. It assumes very little knowledge of databases. At most, the prerequisites are a little knowledge of SQL or of a simple database like Access. Web developers will appreciate the broad, yet helpful approach on everything from table creation to stored procedures. This book teaches by giving concise and well designed examples of queries and code. It will explain topics like cursors, triggers, stored procedures, basic SQL, Transact SQL, and even a little ASP. It even addresses some speed, security, and design issues. Any RDBMS or SQL Server 7.0 neophyte needs this book by his side. I would recommend reading this book first, before you tackle any of the other volumes of SQL Server references online or otherwise.

After reading "Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL, Quick steps for fast results, in 10 Minutes," by Ben Forta, Mr. Robison's pales. The material in general is good, however the details are presented in a string of possible command parameters ... - making it difficult to follow for the novice.I would suggest that the book be rewritten along the lines of Mr. Forta's approach.

This was never one of the top books for the SQL Server 7 exams, some of the more difficult Microsoft exams. Right away, I'm going to confess that after going through all the trouble of getting certified, and it was a lot of trouble, I never worked with databases again.I did not find that the materials were actually covered in the database administration or database design and implementation exams. This item was marketed well, leading me to believe that actual questions and answers from it would be included in the exam, but none were.

Got this hoping to have a reference for possible health issues given personal symptoms. Perused it for about 10 minutes, and found several errors in information (e.g. taste bud zones were debunked a long time ago) and referencing (first item I tried to look up in the index (caffeine) had the wrong page). It really shakes my confidence in how accurate the rest of the information in this book is.Also all around difficult to look up information. Sections are broken up sometimes by classes of diseases, sometimes by body part, and sometimes by holistic categories such as "Addressing End-of-Life Issues". There's no look up by symptom, and no clear section breaks on the edges of the pages.I think this would be best as a coffee table reader, or as an entry-level textbook for someone who hasn't been exposed to personal health before. I will be returning my copy and looking for something else.

I bought this book for my dad, who's complaining about one medical malady or another. This is the third edition he's used, and finds it to be informative, accurate, and comprehensive. It provides him with quick insight into his medical issues and whether or not he needs to see a doctor immediately, or discuss with the doctor at a later time. He's comfortable with the information and is able to understand it. He uses it when his friends tell him of their medical conditions too. It's NOT a substitute for a doctor's examination, or a trip to the emergency room should conditions warrant, but it is a helpful guide that may provide more information than the doctor in this time-sensitive day and age where everyone is in a hurry.

I have the previous edition and it has many flags where I have looked up specific information. It was from this book that I learned that finger joints could be replaced. I have now had four of mine replaced and those are free from pain. I bought the new edition for my son who tends to be paranoid and asks me questions.

I have an older version of this same book and decided it was time to update with a newer version. Unfortunately, the book I received is not properly bound -- it is missing several pages, many pages are out of order, and others are duplicated. Not sure where the fault for this lies...and I didn't realize it until well after the purchase itself was completed. Moral of the story: check the pages when you first receive your book.

This is my go to book whenever any kind of health issue presents itself. I have, in fact, bought copies for other family members and friends. It is clear, easy to read and understand and has proven to reflect the same information we get from our medical providers.It has helped us feel more knowledgable about our own health and health issues so when we do seek medical help from our health provider, we can be better patients.

I was very disappointed with the book. When it arrived the corners of the pages we’re bent. Also there was a sticky substance on the back of the cover. The context of of the book it self seems to be just what I wanted. Unfortunately the condition of the books is not what in expected.

I'm a medical professional and overall, this a good book. It's got a wealth of many ailments, diseases, etc. It doesn't cover too many rare conditions, but does cover a ton. Not a bad book to have in your house for information or guidelines. I use it to refresh my brain when I don't remember certain things about a disease... easier to find it and some basic facts compared to some of my medical books. This is no substitute for medical advice, but no book is.

My granddaughter with her 2 small children have been here with my son and wife, where I live, for several months. They wanted to greet another great grandson who has now arrived; to be "home" for Christmas, for the New Year and for my 93rd birthday. Soon they will return to Honolulu where my son in law is serving with the air force. For Christmas I could think of no better gift than the new Mayo Clinic Family Health Book to guide them, encourage them and thoroughly help them with health and development issues.
