I feel so ashamed and so weak. And cheapened. How could I do this? Lisa Kleypas and I were officially divorced in March of 2018 after I read HELLO STRANGER. And then what do I go and do? Hook up with her again in February of 2019 for this book. Now that it's over I don't feel at all good about myself. And that time together wasn't pleasurable. No Big O for me here. I've been left completely unsatisfied and feel so bad about myself. Not only that, but I had to pay her for our time together.I blame it on Sebastian, my long-ago heartthrob from THE DEVIL IN WINTER. He and his True Love Evie are the parents of this book's heroine, and I had heard he plays a larger role here than he had done in DEVIL IN SPRING, the book about their son Gabriel and that twit Pandora Ravenel. Alas, he may have been on more pages but he came across as a pretty generic silver fox duke who's a super husband (more faithful than a swan), super father/grandfather, and super aristocrat. I calculate he must be in his 60s but he's still gorgeous and still virile without the need to find fresh, nubile women for his bed or even little blue pills. Evie is one lucky little old lady. But as far as any new or interesting developments in their lives, no such thing. And the plot and characters of this book? Just thinking about it and them is putting me to sleep. Generic young widow grieving her dead-too-young invalid husband and former close childhood friend. She's boring and has nothing of the "devil" in her DNA. Our hero is West Ravenel, whom we've known since COLD-HEARTED RAKE. He's a reformed rake and recovering alcoholic who has left London and his scandalous ways behind to become an excellent hands-on estate manager.Phoebe thinks she'll never love again. In addition, she resents West, whom she had never really met, just because as a schoolboy he had bullied her future husband and apparently made his two years away at school a misery. And West thinks he's not worthy of love or happiness. And he fears he could become a physically violent man like his father. Yada, yada, yada.Interspersed with the romance is some boring information about the old vs new ways of farming and managing estates, keeping an estate's financial records, stuff about pig excrement, an enraged bull, lots of descriptions of clothing, food, buildings, and interior decor. There's a token nod to agency for women in that Phoebe must learn to take over control of her son's estate rather than relying on a man. That one got very much watered down by the fact that she ends up relying on West rather than herself. Oh, and I mustn't forget the adorableness factor: the heroine's two young boys and a cat named Galoshes.I'd say that at least one quarter to one third of the pages of the book are spent on sex scenes, whether it be foreplay or the actual deed. And it's all described in unbearably flowery, over-the-top purple prose. I highlighted a couple passages to share:"...[he] eased his aching shaft out of her warm, succulent depths, his body aching in anguish.""...she cried out as he slid back into her, his hardness stretching her lusciously.""...a powerful climax began, wringing every inch of her body with raw force..."Oh, good lord. Pass over the sick bag. I think I may lose my breakfast. So, no thanks. But Kleypas gets two stars from me anyway. She enticed me into buying this, didn't she? If I ever buy another new Kleypas, I must remember to give that future book 5-10 stars, just because of what a good con it was and how she managed to fool me again. And you know what that fooling beyond the first time makes me, right?

Sadly, not a five star, but not a one star by any means.Who's the good boy?Well, not the latest St. Vincent since that would be the son of the man we all love... to love, but the ex St. Vincent, Sebastian, from "Devil in Winter", now the Duke of Kingston. Our St. Vincent is still top of the food chain in this book that features his oldest daughter. No, St. V doesn’t overwhelm the story, but if you’re a fan any glimpses of him and Evie are always great.Phoebe is a widow with two young boys. She adored her young husband who was her childhood sweetheart and was doomed to die an early death. He's a very Keats kind of hero despite this story taking place in the late 19th century."When I have fears that I may cease to beBefore my pen has gleaned my teeming brain,Before high-pilèd books, in charactery,Hold like rich garners the full ripened grain; When I behold, upon the night’s starred face,Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,And think that I may never live to traceTheir shadows with the magic hand of chance; And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,That I shall never look upon thee more,Never have relish in the faery powerOf unreflecting love—then on the shoreOf the wide world I stand alone, and thinkTill love and fame to nothingness do sink."The heroine really loved her husband, but as us readers and her father knows, he was really not THE one.Protective of her husband’s legacy, Phoebe is reluctant to come back to society. Her brother’s wedding has dragged her out of mourning and into association with her husband’s nemesis at school. Concerns of bullying and old grudges are put aside as the h gets to know the West, the charming hero, as he unintentionally woos her and her two young sons. The H steps back from wooing her as he feels unworthy. Lisa Kleypas steals a plot point from "Where Dreams Begin" where the widow’s husband is pledged to one of the husband's cousins/friends.Nice set up for the heroine’s brothers and sisters's books, but, as always, for fans of the older books and hint of Evie and especially St. Vincent is golden. When confronted by the vanilla villain as the H West is attacked by the bad guy at a club. Guess who saves the H? "Even before West had a good look at the newcomer’s face, he recognized the smooth, dry voice with its cut-crystal tones, so elegantly commanding it could have belonged to the devil himself.“Finger off the trigger, XXXXXXX. Now.” It was Sebastian, the Duke of Kingston . . . Phoebe’s father."Apparently St. Vincent is 001, the precursor to 007. He has the moves down and the agents. "Keeping hold of XXXXXXX as if he were a disobedient puppy, Kingston berated him quietly.“After the hours I just spent with you, providing excellent advice, this is the result? You decide to start shooting guests in my club? You, my boy, have been a dismal waste of an evening. Now you’re going to cool your heels in a jail cell, and I’ll decide in the morning what’s to be done with you.”………………………………. "West lifted his hand in a gesture of farewell and followed Niall. The porter was dressed in a uniform, some kind of rich matte cloth in a shade of blue so dark it looked black. No gilt or fancy trim, save for a thin, black, braided trim on the lapels of the coat, and on the collar and cuffs of the white shirt. Very discreet and simple, tailored for ease of movement. It looked like a uniform for killing people."And who the heck is St. Vincent talking about below? St. Westcliff, the new H, someone else? “Most men have inner demons,” Kingston replied quietly. “God knows I do. So does a friend who’s the finest and most genuinely moral man I’ve ever known.”Overall, quite decent action and romance between the charming, well meaning H and the warm heroine, but it never attains the quality and depth that the Hathaway or the Wallflower series have. I needed more about the constraints with the heroine and her MIL, more between the h and H, and more interaction with the OM.I hesitate to suggest this, but there was a rushed aka novella quality and more than a hint of phoned in on the story. So much more could have been addressed rather than simply touched on aka the brief appearance of the other Wallflowers. Still, Lisa Kleypas writing is beautiful and engaging as always.

Story about an absolutely horrific murder by teenage girls. It could have been compelling, but the writing is disjointed, hard to follow and, quite simply, bad. I enjoy Aphrodite Jones on TV, but she needs to take some writing classes.

In the interest of full disclosure let me start by stating that I'am a huge fan of Aphrodite Jones, having said that I quit reading this book half way through.Tedious would be a kind description of this narrative, the ongoing and long dissertations and infinite detail of letters between teenage wannabe lovers/lesbians is more than I could take along with the never ending description of the father and his issues.I have read all of AJ's books and this by far is not up to her standards, I can state this because I had read another account of this incident by another author and so I had a comparative study. I got the impression that AJ was trying to fill pages rather than write a story. In spite of my misgivings with this book I will continue to read and follow this author

Sad, haunting story. It might focus too much on Loveless and her family, slightly ignoring poor Shanda's family life. It still surprises me that a 16 year old would be so jealous of a 12 year old!?! Melinda is a monster.

This is a sad story about a teenage lesbian love triangle in which jealousy led to violent torture and murder of a 12-year-old girl. Here's the deal. Melinda loved Amanda. Shanda loved Amanda. Amanda couldn't make up her mind and was playing on both teams. Melinda requested, ordered, threatened, and warned Shanda to stay away from Amanda. Finally she decided to kill Shanda.Together with three of her friends, Melinda kidnapped Shanda and took her out of town. Melinda assured her friends that she only wanted to scare Shanda, maybe beat her up a little bit. What followed was a living nightmare.13

The facts of this "Lord of the Flies" crime are presented in straightforward, chronological order, without any editorializing, without any attempts at creating suspense. The book reads like an extended police blotter report. But this crime was shocking enough without the need for any fine writing to describe it. A Capote-caliber treatment would always be welcome, but the reader doesn't need the embellishments of literary skill in order to feel the pain and horror of the murder committed outside of the picturesque, Mayberry-like town of Madison, Indiana, in 1992.In this generally complete account of the crime, a few things don't seem to be addressed fully enough. For example, the reader is left wondering how the victim, a 12-year-old girl, was socializing so intensely with 15 and 16-year-olds. Those two age groups usually don't have anything to do with each other. Also the title of the book is a little misleading because the word "Sacrifice" could, in one sense, steer the interpretation of this crime back to the rumor that it was the result of the girls' practicing Satanic rituals. Actually, any interest in Satanic rites or witchcraft played virtually no part in the actual crime. However, this book overall does a good job of telling who the victim and the perpetrators were. One of the best things about Jones' account is that it includes extensive information about the home lives of the teenage perpetrators. We see the extreme dysfunction that existed in these families. There was one father's frequent abuse of his wife and of his three daughters, including many kinky intrusions into the girls' lives. There was a mother's complicity in making such perversions commonplace in their household. There was religious fanaticism. We get an insight into the fierce, but fluctuating, crushes that the teen girls developed on each other. When it came to these love affairs, every emotion the girls felt was immediately translated into operatic hyperbole and acted out in Grand Guignol style. The sheer amount of physical activity these teens engaged in was another surprising element of their lives. Whereas other generations of teens and even many modern teens might go to school, come home, do some homework, and then just slouch around the house, watching TV or goofing off for a while - these teens were up and about virtually every waking hour. They were going to clubs and hooking up sexually with both boys and other girls out in parking lots. They were going to punk rock concerts and getting piercings. They were experimenting with drugs. They were constantly going to each other's houses or talking to each other on the phone. None of them ever seemed to have a moment of quietude, a moment of being alone with herself without being hammered into conformity with peer group mores. So Jones' plainly written account is very revealing about trends in modern life on a number of levels. Many teens and adults alike are leading these always-in-touch hyperactive lives now. However, very few commit such heinous crimes. Reading this, you might be reminded of the Roman playwright Terence's remark that, "Nothing human is alien to me." This book will have you asking over-and-over, "Could I, under any circumstances, be capable of such a crime?"

gets you into the minds of 4 demented females with one mission, to kill a rival of one of them.it is hard to believe that such monsters are breathing the same air as me.To be tortured, beaten ,stabbed, and left nude in a trunk in january in the bitter cold, this poor child was subjected to the most vial, disgusting acts i've ever heard of,and then burned alive. these four things should have gotten death sentences, their putrid lives extinguished the same way as sweet young Shanda.may you rest in eternal peace! But no our immoral justice system let them all make plea deals,as if they let their victim have a deal,as she was begging for her young life.HOPE they all rot in hell

I expected this to me more about the actual crime committed - it was well written book, and I understand the reason it went so deeply into the backgrounds of the girls that committed this awful crime ... just not what I expected.

This story is both compelling and scary. These young girls were just evil with a pack mentality. Their families were so dysfunctional. I was very caught up with this story and wonder how all their lives have progressed.

This is the tale of the near-death and reinvention of Nokia, an iconic Finnish company that, over its 150-year history, has made everything from paper to rubber boots to cellphones, its best-known area of market dominance until the company was blindsided by the success of the iPhone and the Android operating system. This is no dry management tome. In a vivid and suspenseful read, Nokia chairman Risto Siilasmaa details the panic and helplessness that sets in as the company spirals toward oblivion. His account features a rare level of specificity, creating a you-are-in-the-boardroom feeling. One of my favorite aspects of this book was that even after Nokia appeared to find salvation (by selling key assets to Microsoft) it wasn’t yet possible to relax. What if those assets lost value between the time the deal was signed and the time the deal closed? What if regulators in select countries (Nokia is a global corporation, after all) dragged their feet on okaying the deal? Both of these things happened, a reminder that a deal isn’t completed with a big, splashy press announcement—months or even years of nervous waiting can lie ahead.Throughout this book, Siilasmaa provides practical suggestions about assessing the true state of a company’s health and competitiveness, dealing with bad news, and being a tough-but-fair negotiator. I found this book interesting and I also came away with concepts that I can apply to my own business, even though I am a sole proprietor.

What Risto and the team were able to do at Nokia is really remarkable. This book gives a unique peek behind the curtain on topics that one rarely has the opportunity to hear about including boardroom dynamics in huge listed companies, how multi-billion dollar acquisitions are negotiated and company leadership culture reshaped. Must read for professional board members, investors and CEOs.

You need to read this book, small business owner or head of a stock listed company. Mr. Siilasmaa reminds us about the forgotten way to do the business, nowadays has become a serious matter. "The Golden Rules" chapter he covers the principles that should be applied in any business, my favorite is the one which relates to formality and substance relating to meetings, in which he writes “Any meeting where we don’t laugh out loud is a miserable failure!”. Never forget to laugh, running a business is fun.One of the chapters is called “Plan B … and Plan C and Plan D.” where he emphasizes the importance of using scenario mapping. The Plan F does not mean Plan Fail, but Plan F.And the story itself about the company which lost 90% of its market value and the comeback. The route to its rebirth makes for fascinating reading.

The author gives us a review of Nokia travel from the edge of abyss to the new life. The book is combination of a corporate story and personal thought. This is a mandatory reading for any inspirational executive.

An absolute delight to read; Insightful account of one of the biggest business failures and subsequent turnarounds of recent years.Well written, thought provoking, and even thrilling at times, this book is a pleasure to read. And it’s even educational, without feeling like a lecture. Highly recommended.

Well written and easy to read book about Nokias crisis and survival - transformation to a new company. Provides deeper insight and explanation not for only for those who worked at Nokia during those years, but also to those who don’t know Nokia’s history that well.

I picked this up after got a hint of this book’s existence and finish it in just a week. Very interesting and from perspective of the man who is in the center of Nokia transformation. For fan of business book and technical history, this is must read.

Transforming Nokia was an outstanding read! It truly was a powerful story of one of the most remarkable turnarounds in corporate history. I Highly recommend this book.

I will admit, I watched the excellent movie before reading this collection, so I was not surprised by much in this story. However, there are numerous plotlines left out of the movie, further explanations on the origin of Red Hood, and more depth in this collection. In short, even if you HAVE seen the movie, this collection is still different enough to not be classified as entirely predictable. When I first opened the envelope this book came in, I was surprised at its size. I had looked at the page count on the product description, but was still taken back a bit by how big this collection is. I paid a bit more than I thought I would have to for this book, but immediately felt a bit relieved when I saw its girth. Anyway, the writing style is very enjoyable. This functions pretty well as a stand-alone book, but there are a few significant story points readers ought to be familiar with before reading this collection. I had read 'Death in the Family' before this, so I knew all about Joker's murdering of Robin. If you're a Batman fan that has read pretty much any comic post 1986(ish), this should come as no surprise to you. What was surprising was that, apparently, Black Mask (who is a delight to read in this story) is no the chief mob boss in Gotham. While this was explained briefly, it felt a little off at first, since as far as I have read, Black Mask has been a hard B-level villain. There are several plot points similar to this in UtRH, but nothing is outright confusing. What I'm trying to say is that this Batman story is definitely more entrenched in then-current story canon than say, The Long Halloween. Regardless, dialogue is penned very well, with characters' speech patterns easily distinguishable and organic. The story moves a bit awkwardly at some points, in a way that I can only say was noticeable because I have seen the film adaptation. I must say, certain points of the movie's scene ordering is superior to the book, but the movie had the advantage of picking and choosing which elements it wanted to retain. Overall, this is a just a cool story, and the stakes feel real for the Dark Knight. He is facing one of his most challenging opponents, an opponent he may not be able to, or even want to, stop. The art was slightly disappointing in this collection. Mahnke's talent has improved over the years from this work, so the work here has not all aged well. The most noticeable example is probably the image at the start of each chapter. Batman's chest looks laughably stylized, and way off-proportionally. That being said, none of his work is awful; it is at worst mediocre. In certain panels, he knocks it out of the park, and that is the art I identify most with this story. Selected panels from Jim Lee's Hush are included in the end of this book, which makes all prior work seem weaker by comparison. To end, I'm very glad I purchased this book. It introduced an excellent new villain who is anything but black and white. This collection is not perfect, but it was a very satisfying read across every chapter. It never becomes dull, and while sometimes predictable, not riddled with distracting story tropes. While not enjoying the same proportional excellence as its movie counterpart, any fan of the movie, or Batman in general, will enjoy this collection.

I bought Under the Red Hood along with A Death in the Family because I'm a huge Batman fan and yet had never read either of these stories. Since they're intrinsically connected, I thought it would be fun to read them back-to-back.I cannot suggest this approach highly enough--A Death in the Family is SO MUCH BETTER than I thought it would be, given its age. And the two stories are wonderfully connected in interesting ways.Under the Red Hood (UtRH) is an excellent story--there were some confusions because I didn't realize that the War Games and Hush story lines impact what's going on in UtRH. I still haven't read War Games, but I have read Hush--and if you haven't, go ahead and do yourself a favor and pick it up. I did some quick research to answer my questions in relation to War Games (Why is Nightwing in a knee brace and why is Barbara Gordon, AKA Oracle, not in the story) and I was more than able to continue. My only complaint, and the reason for the -1 star, is that somewhere towards the end of the arc, they switched to an artist that I honestly thought was some kind of amateur. Sincerely bad--his drawings of the Joker alone made me want to put the book down. BUT, the story itself was good.I will also say that, at times, the dialogue between Batman and the Red Hood (mostly towards the end) felt kind of...silly, I guess. Like they were talking around the subject in order to fill pages. But still--this is a great buy.

Like so many people who left a review before me, I read this book after watching the 'Under the Red Hood' movie as well as the Arkham Knight game. This is first formal introduction of Jason Todd in the comics and man is it good. Jason Todd wasn't like the other Robins and you can see what lengths he goes to help save Gotham in his own way. Good story and loved the action and art.. Highly recommended!

Batman: Under the Red Hood is an extremely important and influential Batman story, for obvious reasons, and you really get bang for your buck with this surprisingly thick volume. I was shocked at how it dwarfed some of my other volumes, and I was left reading it all day, even when I skimmed some segments. Without spoiling too much, this is a great book not only for how it characterizes Batman, The Joker, and the Red Hood, but also the attention and fantastic writing to underrated villain Black Mask. My only real complaint is that some of the writing is a little scattered and busy when it brings in the DCU at large. I understand that references to outside material is cool, but if you didn't read (or do some serious research) about the era in which this came out, you'll be almost completely lost regarding a few key plot points. The sub-plot regarding The Society was almost entirely pointless as well, serving to give Deathstroke a couple (admittedly cool) scenes and then give a very confusing a limp twist, which was later retconned away.Overall, Under the Red Hood is a great and entertaining read, just one that could have done with a little more editorial control.

First and foremost, I wasn't exactly broken up when the Joker murdered Jason Todd. I found him an extremely unlikeable Robin. So with that being said, I wasn't so sure I would like this at all.But I loved this! Jason Todd as the Red Hood is an extremely likeable character! In fact I loved him!! All the qualities that made him an obnoxious Robin, worked for him in this story. I never thought I would see the day where I not only liked Jason Todd, but also felt for him and empathized with him. This story is incredibly well written!!I loved watching someone screw over Black Mask, because I often get so sick of him and I loved the dialogue so much!! The scene with Joker, Batman and Jason goes down as one of my all time favorite moments ever!!I am now happy to say one of my least favorite characters has been made into one of my favorites :) Definitely worth owning, and definitely one you will want to read again :)

I am an MBA student. The BMA book was our text book but I found that book is pretty difficult to read and even after reading the book my concepts were not clear. I used the pair of Helfert books along with the IVO welch and the Higgins books and the concepts were crystal clear. I highly recommend this book or the other Helfert book.

In fantastic condition. No marks or tears.

Very good overview of financial analysis and managment concepts. Since I do not have a finance background I found this book to be a good introduction with just enough detail to make me sound like I know what I'm talking about.

FINAL DECISION: A fine continuation of the story of a witch, a vampire and their search which takes them back in time. I loved how this book developed their relationship and challenged their characters through resurrection of their pasts.THE STORY: Diana Bishop, a witch, and Matthew Clairmont, a vampire, have broken the law of creatures by having a romantic relationship. Jumping off from the events in book one, Diana and Matthew have traveled back in time to Elizabethan England in order to find a teacher to help Diana learn about and control her powers. Although the two seek safety in the past, they find that a whole new host of dangers threatens them and their relationship.OPINION: A long and meandering journey through Elizabeth's England where the fictional characters mix with real historical figures, this book develops both the mythology of the trilogy and also the relationship between Diana and Matthew.I enjoyed seeing these characters approach the challenges that face them. The book, which like the others in the series is over 550 pages, asks for a commitment from its readers. Everything is slow and deliberate -- not boring, not pointless -- and takes its time developing both the characters and the plot. At times during the book, I wondered whether the destination would be worth it. While the conclusion excited me about the finale book in the series, the entirety of the development of the relationship between Diana and Matthew and their own working out of their own challenges from their past snagged me for every page. The book doesn't always go in the way that I expected it to and it is certainly an epic read. It does suffer somewhat from being part of the trilogy and the middle book at that. At the end of the book there is no real conclusion -- because there is one more book. Thus, this book doesn't truly stand on its own and requires reading both the first and third books in the series.WORTH MENTIONING: The historical expertise of the author is put to good use here. The past feels authentic and I enjoyed using this book as a springboard to learn more about the real historical figures depicted in the book.CONNECTED BOOKS: SHADOW OF NIGHT is the second book in the All Souls Trilogy. The book should be read as part of the trilogy.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

Shadow of Night follows on the heels of A Discovery of Witches. In some ways Shadow of Night is the better book–the text flows more smoothly, not every single character is cranky all the time, and the pacing has improved. However, it has a few flaws of its own.First, the time-walking; I have a few problems with how this was carried out. For instance, the historical Matthew conveniently vanishes with future Matthew visiting. I can see how this was the only way Harkness could have the story she wanted, but it’s such a bald-faced deus ex machina. Matthew of course knows the famous historical figures of the time, including queens and emperors, which seems awfully stupid for a creature whose very existence relies on everyone else not noticing that he isn’t aging. Matthew and Diana also seem to have picked a very unstable and dangerous time to visit; I never really figured out why they thought that was a good idea. They’re supposed to not make changes to the past, but how could they possibly not when they’re dealing with such powerful people? And yet of course they don’t end up changing too much despite everything they’re doing that the time-appropriate Matthew wouldn’t have. There’s also the inevitable historical trope of the headstrong woman vs. the overprotective man in her life.Diana is still a Mary Sue, right down to taking in a street urchin on a whim who then becomes a treasured member of the family. The unique familiar. The need for a highly unusual set of teachers. The jealousy or adoration that everyone feels for her. (Yes, even the relevant emperor becomes besotted with Diana. Don’t tell me you’re surprised.) She’s also still ridiculously easy for people to manipulate; she does a lot of stupid stuff–but of course since she’s a Mary Sue, these things don’t come back to haunt her. What I really want to know is how on earth Matthew-from-the-future and Diana could possibly expect historical Matthew to not notice (after modern Matthew goes back to the future) that he’s been out of commission for ages. I don’t care how much his friends are determined to shield him from that knowledge, it’s going to be really hard to avoid people, say, asking him where his wife is, given that they got to know everyone. It just doesn’t add up. Again, it’s a hand-waved deus ex machina.

After reading the first book 7 years ago I eagerly looked forward to the continuation of Diana and Matthew’s love story. I bought the second book paying the hardcover price as soon as it was available. Over the years I tried twice to read Shadow of Night. I am happy to report that I finally accomplished my goal. My overall impression is mixed. There were some interesting elements that I liked about the ambiance of the Elizabethan era but I felt the plot got lost in the minutiae. I felt that the author must have rushed the second book to get it published. The plot wasn’t as well thought out and some of the twists were very confusing. I am going to take a break from this series before deciding if I will read the third book. All in all I’m very happy that I finally completed my mission of finishing this book. I only wish that it had been a better investment.
