Ian Hunter's daily diary of his experiences on the road in America with Mott the Hoople in 1972 is considered one of the best rock books ever written. This edition includes new forewords by actor Johnny Depp and Mott the Hoople's official biographer, Campbell Devine. There are new photo pages and a new prologue by Hunter. In 1972, Mott were a one-hit wonder with their song All The Young Dudes. Although they had released four albums prior to that, they never broke through in America. They began the tour as a supporting act, but later in the tour began headlining. Hunter kept a diary during the tour and that is the basis of this book. It's presented in diary format, detailing the rather mundane day to day of a touring B-list band. Hunter had just remarried prior to the tour, so he was on his best behavior (so he claims), so there isn't much sex and drugs to go along with the rock and roll. Although in Devine's foreword Hunter is quoted as saying that some details may have been scrubbed to protect others, Keith Moon in particular. While you may feel cheated by the non-titillating details of life on the road, Ian's sense of humor and observations on the music business are the gold here. You'll keep reading not to catch the next tale of debauchery, but because Hunter is so likable. Even if you are not a fan of the band (as I am) you may find Hunter's tale an enjoyable read.

It's too bad this excellent little book is so hard to find! It really gives you a true picture of what it was like to be a rock-n-roll star in the early 70's when rock was at its peak. Mott the Hoople were just "in the pocket." They were big enough stars to draw large crowds and be well recognized and respected, but they were never exactly superstars. They were the "blue collar" of rock-n-rollers and this book shows that very well. It also shows, in an unvarnished way, how a Briton viewed America back then, including some very poignant comments on the state of our race relations in this country. Ian Hunter isn't preachy, he just tells it the way he sees it. He is also a very literate writer. Having been in his mid-to-late 30's when he was touring, he was older than many other musicians at the time. Old enough, in fact, to have had a previous career as a print journalist which made his observations and translation to writing very good, indeed!

Always hoped this book would be reissued. Here, it includes an "afterward" tour diary of Hunter's recent tour of Japan. Not the sex-and-drugs stuff, but a really detailed view of the early 70s in America, as well as the joys and difficulties of touring as a mid-level act. The pawn shop tales alone are worth the price of the book.

Ian Hunter proves himself to be one of the most articulate and intelligent personalities in rock in this diary of Mott's late '72 US tour in support of their All The Young Dudes album. It is a humble, egoless tale of the steps and stumbles of a band trying to break into the American market, lovingly and honestly told through the eyes of a young aspiring band leader. Refreshingly free of the self-cogradulatory tone of most autobiographies and the slathering praise of too many band books by fan-...-journalists, this modest (read: short) work starts and ends with the reader inside the day-to-day workings of a mid-level journeyman band, warts and all. Best of all (or, worst of all, depending upon your point of view), this isn't so much a book about Mott The Hoople and their music as it is a look at the human realities of what life on the road was like for the guys in the band, or most bands like them at that time. It captures perfectly the tone of the time and the atmosphere prevailing in the early '70's. It strips away the facades and breathes life into the rigors, rewards and frustrations of chasing the musical Holy Grail. I first bought this book in London in 1975, and have read and re-read it more times than I can remember. Raw, spontanious and unpretentious, it is funny, sad, touching and rewarding, especially with the hindsight of the band's history immediately after the end of the book. A must read for any music fan, and essential for any one who wishes to understand the period when the music became secondary to the business concerns. I love this book.

Johnny Depp was carrying this book in his pocket when I met him recently at a Hollywood Vampire concert so of course j had to buy it. Very cool writing...cool book!

I've been a fan of Mott for a long long time. When I saw this book I figured I just had to read it. I was not disappointed. It's always interesting to me to get a behind the scenes look at life on the road for big time bands. It's a fun and easy read.

Wonderful! Arrived ahead of time, can't put it down. I understand why its back in print!

Fantastic book, Ian is a first class writer as well as a true rocker.
