The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary (English and Latin Edition)

Review

The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Baronius Press is a wonderful new printing of a tried and true classic which every Catholic should include in their library. Much more brief than the Divine Office, the Little Office in honor of Our Lady is a way for lay Catholics to join the universal Church in her daily prayers. Traditional Catholics will love the fact that this edition complies with the 1961 editio typica for the Immemorial Mass, using readings from the Douay-Rheims, Challoner version of the Holy Bible, with Psalms from the Vulgate of St. Jerome, and includes the full Latin text of each Office in addition to the vernacular. Furthermore, Catholics familiar with Gregorian notation can say each Office the same way as countless Saints through the ages- in beautiful Gregorian chant, since this edition uniquely contains the entire Gregorian chant of each Office. Beautifully bound and printed, with a soft, flexible leather cover and lightweight but sturdy gilded pages, with two ribbons, one blue and one gold, and an included card containing the conclusions of prayers in the Office, which can be used as a third bookmark, the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Baronius Press features a classic Missal layout, in bold black and red text, with the English on left and Latin translation on the right. There are actually three books within- one set of Offices for each season, with Office 1 being used throughout the year, Office 2 used during Advent, and Office 3 used from first Vespers of the Nativity until the Feast of the Purification. Each Office also contains a section for Eastertide, so the faithful Catholic can celebrate with the Church all year long. Prefaced by the Very Reverend Father John Berg, Superior General of the Priestly Society of Saint Peter (FSSP), with a wonderful introduction by Theo Keller explaining the history of the Little Office, the book contains the Imprimatur of the Most Reverend Fabian W. Bruskewitz, DD, STD, Bishop of Lincoln. Besides all this, several appendices contain descriptions of prayers and liturgy, notes on the Office, rubrics, a calendar of feasts, list of indulgences for faithful recitation of the Office, litanies- all in a book which easily fits in a back pocket or purse. It is amazing how much was able to be included in this little two hundred twenty-seven page book! If prayed slowly and attentively, each Office takes about twenty minutes, or the same length of time as a Rosary. So there is no reason why every Catholic should not include the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary as part of their daily prayers. --Joshua - from the website Tiberriver.com

We highly recommend this version of the book published by Baronius Press in English and Latin. There are other versions of a Little Office to Mary, but this is the one that we recommend and are using for direction. It has a leather cover and superior binding. It ships from the US for American customers. We derive no profit whatever from Baronius Press which simply publishes excellent quality Catholic books. --Boston Catholic JournalIf you buy a print copy of the Divine Office or a Little Office, make sure you find the most beautiful, traditional version you can. My mother wanted to pray the Divine Office, and she spent a LOT of money on a modern (current, vernacular) edition but she found the translations so weak and watery, and the intercessory prayers so wishy-washy that she was driven to give it up! She doesn t know Latin, though, so she didn t want to use a traditional Breviary and not understand a word of it. After she finally found the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary she was very happy! It was just the thing: sacred and reverent, beautiful, and connected to centuries of tradition. (Baronius Press publishes one with readings and psalms from the Douay-Rheims translation of the Bible, which is just beautiful.) --St. Catherine Catholic Culture Center, March 2014Recently I began praying again The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Baronius Press. I purchased this about a year ago, I think, and was impressed with the quality of the product. It is a very compact, yet elegant prayer book. Having prayed the Liturgy of the Hours at various points over the past 7 years, this little office is in many ways refreshing. This edition is the 1961 edition, which follows the older organization of the hours, before the post-conciliar reforms. Although I am Novus Ordo guy, I must say that over the past week I have been really drawn to praying this office. Perhaps it is the simplicity of this little office or maybe the dual English-Latin prayers on the same page. I also like the almost 1000 year history and tradition that is a part of this office. I am planning to stick with this for the next few months. I have been able to pray most of the hours, except for the matins. Although I am sure there will be some late nights in the future with her, so that might change! ;) --Timothy McCormick, Catholic Bibles Blog, June 2011

Baronius Press, back in 2007, were the first to re-publish the Little Office. Since then, it has gone through four different printings, mostly due to fixing errors in the text. I would highly recommend that you get the 4th edition, which has alleviated the prior issues. As usual, the quality of the edition is top-notch, with a blue leather "flexible" (with boards) cover and a sewn binding. Two ribbons are added to make flipping through this small office quite easy. It looks and feels great, and it will certainly last a lifetime. My original edition (2007) was used lovingly and often to the point that I had it outside while it was raining, which ended up marking up the gold gilding. Yet, it remains quite readable and sturdy, with no issues with the binding or the leather cover. This newer edition comes with a 2011 nihil obstat/imprimatur and is in conformity with Pope Emeritus Benedict's Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum. There is a short introduction along with a fascinating 50 page appendix with articles explaining the Little Office. The appendix also includes the older liturgical calendar, various Marian prayers, and a short article on indulgences related to this prayer. There are also commemorations of St. Joseph and the Saints, which can be added to Lauds and Vespers for additional variety on these feast days and solemnities. Content is the same between the four editions, although the earlier editions had some typos that have been fixed in subsequent editions. The Baronius Little Office has the English and Latin on the same page, which makes it easy to pray using both languages. In addition, this Little Office contains the complete Gregorian Chant for praying all the hours.

This book restores the former, traditional beauty and dignity of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.I believe all (or nearly all) typos have been corrected in this latest edition. The printing is crystal clear, the instructions/rubrics are easy to understand and follow. The pages are quality paper of substantial weight, so there is no ghosting from the printing on the other side of the page.Interesting to note: the paper is not white-white. It is very slightly soft- yellow toned, just as blue-blocking on computers and Fire Pads. This helps neurologically to avoid over stimulation - especially helpful when praying the Compline hour just before taking sleep. The book is quite hearty: stitched together, with a well made hem-stichedblue leather cover.Having had this Little Office before - lost in a plumbing deluge - I can confidently recommend it. Praying this particular office gives good satisfaction, and will only heighten our holiness and readiness to meet our Blessed Mother, her Heavenly Father, her Divine Son, and her Holy Spouse in heaven's abode.

I decided to buy this edition because the one I own by Angelus Press is a paperback and does not have the Gregorian Chant. However, the edition published by Angelus Press has the Office of the Dead, which is not included in this one published by Baronius Press. Nonetheless, I am keeping both editions. My only regret is the an earlier edition of the Little Office of the BVM I have for Kindle has the Trisagion Prayer for some of the offices, as well as at least one other prayer from the Byzantine/Melkite Rite, which apparently was removed by 1961. Oh, well.None of these issues keep me from giving this publication 5 stars. One who owns both editions could use this one regularly, and the Angelus Press edition as needed. If one attends an FSSP Mass, this one would be better.Want to learn more ecclessiastical Latin and how to read Gregorian Chant notation? The Little Office of the BVM can help you do that.

I highly recommend The Little Office of the BVM by Baronius Press. In addition to the hours of the Office there is a 20+ page article explaining just about everything about the Little Office as well as The Angelus, The Litany of Our Lady of Loreto and an abbreviated calendar of the church's major feasts and Holy Days. The book is well constructed with a flexible leather cover and two ribbons. The black and red print is easy on the eyes and the print is plenty large enough for easy reading.I really can find nothing wrong with the book and I highly recommend it to all people who want to say the office and don't have the time or inclination to recite the newer Liturgy of the Hours.

Loved this book so much, I bought two copies! (one to keep in the house, the other for the car) I really don't want to be without it.If you feel the need for daily prayer, there is nothing better than The Little Office to get you going. I especially love the two column format (English to the left - Latin to the right). There's no need to flip back and forth through the pages the way one has to with The Liturgy of the Hours, and no (or at least very little) worry about what date it is - the prayers pretty much stay the same throughout most of the year. And having all seven hours included means there's something appropriate for whatever time of day it happens to be when you have need to pause and reflect. The font is not too small for aging eyes, the layout is attractive, the paper is highest quality, the binding superb, and the overall appearance quite beautiful. Two (Tiny) Complaints: 1) Why did they bother to end several prayers with "etc.", where you have to continue on the included card? It's not like they needed to print that many extra words to put the concluding prayers in full. 2) The English translations of the Latin hymns are quite free, and it is difficult for the non-expert (like myself) to match the two columns up. At times, the texts seem to have no relationship whatsoever to each other.Final note: Several other reviewers have complained about numerous typographical errors. They must be referring to previous editions. I have the fourth edition, and have (so far) noticed only one printing error in the entire book, on page 46. And I was looking!
