If you just want factual information (hours of operation, Metro stop) and want to see how things are arranged by neighborhood, then this is for you. Personally, I like a bit of opinion in my guidebooks: must-sees, tips on when to go or how to maximize time, what's overrated, etc. With Google in my pocket now, a guidebook like this isn't a huge value-add.
DK travel guides are the best. They contain all sorts of useful information. They also contain colorful pictures and maps of various kinds. They show you what you want to see with a minimum amount of space wasted on restaurants and hotels. (They should dump this useless information.) Unfortunately, the price for beautiful glossy pages is a very heavy guidebook. You want to carry them around with you, but you have to carry a pretty hefty item. I usually tear the pages of the things that I'm visiting that day out of the book and carry them instead of the whole book. It's a shame to have to do that with such a nice book, but that's the sacrifice to avoid a bad back. Of course, the general information at the back doesn't need to be carried along. We used this book in Washington in April 2013. The maps, the metro guide, the info on the Smithsonian and other places. Typical DK.I removed one star because of the weight.
Usually these books have a more detailed fold-out map in them. I found this one was missing a lot, which made it hard to tell when I left one section of town n entered another. It also meant I had to carry the whole book instead of just the foldout map when I left my hotel. I'm accustomed to using the book to plan and the map during the day to get to places I find in the book--but too many were missing to do that this time. Also please update information on open hours. Incorrect data for many locations in Georgetown (got there and found out they were closed) and a couple of the Smithsonian sites (open longer than expected).Last thing--definitely did not properly warn me about the poor options for eating when doing tourist activities. I feel like a lot of the details that are usually in the Eyewitness series we're missing in this book. Had they added just a few more pages (and a few dots/colored zones) on the map) they could've covered this and I would've been a lot better prepared.
Great book. Loved the pullout map. Used it everyday of our trip. Love these Eyewitness books. Use them everywhere. Paris, London, New York, Chicago, and now Washington, DC. Always up to date and packed with great information.
Anytime I travel to a new city, especially over seas, I buy a DK Eyewitness travel guide. The book is designed to have everything conveniently at your fingertips while traveling in the city like subway maps, detailed information on making international calls, using any of the city's transportation systems, and compact but easy to read street maps. You can get off a subway and use the included street map to find just about anything. It breaks the city into sections and for each section it includes major sites of interest. For the most popular places to visit, it includes hours, costs, nearest subway(s), and sometimes museum floor maps highlighting the location of the most popular exhibits. I can't praise this series enough, you will literally have everything you need to get around the city on your own.
I traditionally get a Moon or Lonely Planet guidebook for my travels, but l am so glad that I chose the DK Eyewitness guide to Washington D.C.! (I promise this is not an advertisement). The book is lightweight and has just enough background info about a wide range of tourist sites, and great directions as to how to get there via metro. It also has nice photos, maps, diagrams and walking tour suggestions. It is so well-made with a high-quality laminated cover/binding -- it is really a pleasure to hold and not even embarrassing to walk around with. Also includes a small section on major sites outside of the city. The laminated map was a necessity in the rain and occasional snow and well-appreciated! The book would be improved if it had a symbol that indicates whether or not a museum/attraction charges an entry fee. Also, if you are looking for restaurant suggestions, coverage is very general. I would suggest referring to an online source, which would be the most current.
I've always liked the DK travel guides. They have lots of illustrations and just enough history and detail to enable you to decide which things you'd like to explore in person. In D.C., that's important, as without a full month, you just cannot begin to see it all. So it's helpful to get a good sense of what's there, and then you can prioritize. On our recent short trip, with our teen-aged son, we conducted a brief city circuit by car. Then we chose to focus on the great martial monuments-- the Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the war memorials on the mall. Having the pictures and a bit of the history helped us build back story for him, and get him excited about what he was going to see. And the pull-out laminated map was fantastic for orientation.
This was an excellent travel guide. The way it was organized was very helpful in making the most of our trip.
