From School Library Journal

Equal parts guide and inspirational tome, this volume fills a gap in the existing maker literature as a one-stop source for easily achievable, clearly described classroom projects. The authors present 51 tried and tested activities with concise instructions and clear photos. Each entry contains insightful tips for classroom use to ensure that novice and expert maker librarians alike will be able to lead students with confidence. The book effectively incorporates both projects requiring pricey materials (Sphero robots, Makey Makey kits) and those necessitating supplies that many libraries will already have on hand (balloon hovercrafts, Popsicle stick kazoos). Libraries with an existing maker space and a budget to accrue additional materials will find the equipment-intensive projects far more achievable than will libraries with limited funds. Both authors teach in high school settings, but some projects are suitable for younger makers; middle and even upper elementary school students could certainly tackle some of the more difficult projects with a supportive teacher-librarian at the helm. The Graveses also include hashtags and their social media account information to encourage project sharing and maker community building. VERDICT Librarians clamoring for a maker guidebook will appreciate this much-needed resource full of projects for almost all levels.—Amy M. Laughlin, Ferguson Library, Stamford, CT

With winter just around the corner and kids staying inside more due to the weather, this is an excellent way to keep them entertained while sneaking in some valuable skills in a world that grows more automated by the day. This is not the first MAKE book we have purchased and it will definitely not be the last. The way this particular book is set up is more like an instruction guide than prior books which are more free flowing when it comes to the steps to follow to complete one of the projects. Personally I felt this took a little bit away from the whole 'Maker spirit', but I did appreciate the clear step-by-step for the projects when flipping through the book with my 12 y.o. nephew. There is no shortage of projects that caught his eye, and he already talking up grand plans to see if it might be possible to combine some leads with others in order to come up with something much bigger and much cooler than the original listed idea. Though he's not yet been to a Maker Faire, my hubby/his uncle has been to several so both are raring to get started with their first project...once they can narrow their choices down from the dozen they have marked as "DO THIS ONE FIRST!!!" Though his school doesn't have a science fair, this book is full of ideas for your child to enter into their science fair. No more tomato soup exploding volcanoes - now they can makeFor some of the projects it's likely that you may not have some of the tools or safety gear on-hand. Safety goggles, fire extinguisher (just to be safe!), soldering iron, non-static mat when dealing with chips and circuits - most of the items can be purchased for fairy cheap at a nearby Harbor Freight (they've always got a 20% off coupon in Sunday papers, online, and in-store) or craft store. Each project offers a chance to learn some new skill. Some skills, like soldering, you probably want your child to practice until you and they are comfortable with it, and there's great videos on YouTube, Make.com, Instructibles.com, Wikihow, or eHow.com that will give great instructions.I love that this Make book is aimed more for kids than previous editions. Those are better for adults, experienced older kids, or kids helping out a knowledgeable parent. If you ever have the chance to attend a Maker Faire in your area, do it! There's something for everyone to look at and say "Oh, WOW. That is so cool!" and activities for everyone to take part in. It's a fun way to become more than just an end user of today's tech, and who knows, maybe it will inspire your child to create a product that changes the world.

This is a great book for adults who would like to work with students in a maker space. Unfortunately, from the marketing of this product, I thought this book would make a good gift for a young teen maker. After looking through the book I see that there are just not enough pictures and the directions aimed at adults will most likely discourage him from following through with the activities. This book should be marketing as a teaching tool rather than a book for makers.

This seems to me to be a little more advanced than the author's "Evil Genius" book. So I might get this second after you've had some time to get to know and work with the Makey Makey. Also, you need a basic knowledge of soldering for a lot of the projects.

This is a great resource for anyone considering starting a Makerspace. The book contains projects with clear directions, common items and reasonable prices. It is a win-win for everyone.

Great book, lots of fun activities and good instructions with pictures. It has been enjoyed by my children from 4yo to 14yo and the neighbor kids. Excited to see my students looking through the book for their own "spatks".

Given as a gift to a wanna-be geek - very well received.

Many practical ideas to help a teacher implement more STEM activities in the classroom. Pictures are helpful and explanations are thorough. The book arrived quickly.

This book is a great resource for those starting a MakerSpace or looking for different approaches to an existing MakerSpace.

For 8 year old grandson. Good idea's
