SRIRANGA VEERARAGHAVAN is a material scientist by training and a software engineer by trade. He has several years of software development experience in C, Java, Perl, and Bourne Shell and has contributed to several books, including Solaris 8: Complete Reference, UNIX Unleashed and Special Edition Using UNIX. Sriranga graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1997 and is presently pursuing further studies. He is currently employed in the Server Appliance group at Sun Microsystems, Inc. Before joining Sun, Sriranga was employed at Cisco Systems, Inc. Among other interests, Sriranga enjoys mountain biking, classical music, and playing Marathon with his brother Srivathsa. Great Manual for overall familiarization with some great tools. I used this when i was the DBA and lead programmer for a hospital. It gave great information on several powerful tools (Awk, Sed, Bash shell, etc). It didn’t explain every little detail (that’s why you have man pages) but it did a good job of explaining the purpose of the tools.About the title: their idea is to learn this in 24 one hour lessons. For most of us, that means a couple months. This doesn’t mean you’ll become better in one day than people who’ve dedicated their lives to this. But this will help you if your superpower lies in another part of the system, but want to make these tools also work for you.

not gonna happen! it takes most people YEARS to learn the linux CLI. however a very good guide to programming for same. some of the examples though do not work in all distros. recommended for advanced linux users that know something about programming basics. this uses CLI bash script language so if you don't know what that is this book is NOT for you!

This book is okay. Each chapter has a summary, mini-quiz and glossary at the end. The book gives a URL to download the answers to the quizzes, but comes back as a 404 error. The answers are in the back of the book though anyway. A bit dated; some of the commands have evolved/changed. Found some errors in the book and some info is given w/o clear explanation. For Unix, but Linux users can gain from it too.

Becoming thouroghly proficent in various shells and being able to write shell scripts whether simple or of vast complexity is a fundemental requirement for becoming *NIX savvy. Whatever your flavor, Linux, OpenBSD, Solaris - you must know shell scripting to be taken seriously.The title of this book, "Teach Yourself Shell Programming in 24 Hours" is no joke. Even if you know nothing of this subject, a couple passes through this book will bring you all the way up to a moderate and respectable level of proficency. While this book only covers a tiny part of a massive skill, you will leave this book with the confidence and the ability to learn more and more without the help of another book. Of course, there are more advanced books out there, and it can't hurt to look, but I STRONGLY reccomend starting here.

I have not used shell scripting in the long time. I ordered this book and it helps me refresh a lot about Unix and shell scripting leanrt in school many years ago as undergraduate student. The book is well-written and will keep you excited. One important thing is: practice as you are reading. By the time you finish the book you should be able to grab much from the book. I downloaded the Sun Solaris 9 that I installed on x86 computer and I am playing with some flavors of shell writing small shell scripts.

the author does a good job at easing the reader into learning the content, however, he could make this book much better by giving the reader exercises to do in each chapter to cement the concept. All in all though, it's worth reading and much easier to stick with than O'reilly's "learning the bash shell", which is also a very good book but in my opinion it moves way to fast for someone trying to learn the concepts.

the author does a good job to demonstrate the basic on how to write shell scripts. The book contains useful tips and examples (real life problems you may face in your daily job), but keep on mind you'll need more advanced material to master UNIX shell scripts. ...
