I really enjoyed the first book about all my now friends from Zion Lutheran church in Bradbury so I was anxious for the next book to be published. Now that I have read The Choir Immortal, I am even more anxious for the next installment from Bradbury. The characters are so familiar and people are not that unlike myself living in a small town going to a small Lutheran church. I do not want to spoil anyone's read but there are situations and characters that come to life so well that I cannot help but feel a close kinship to them. I am also surprised by a character that I did not like so well becoming one of my favorite characters in this book. It is almost like a "tale of Two Cities" type switch and I really have a lot of respect for this certain Bradbury College professor. This book has all the warmth of living in a small town with added humor, suspense, surprises, sorrows, joys,and just plain good fun. Read it, you'll love.
I really enjoyed the story and characters presented in this book but enjoyed the first book a little more. As I wrote for my review of the first book of the series, I hope the author changes her mind and continues the story beyond the 3rd book of the series, much like the Father Tim books from Jan Karon. I think there are many stories these characters have to tell. It is nice to read stories that show real-life difficulties as well as real-life joys.
The Choir Immortal did not disappoint! As an LC-MS pastors wife and choir director myself, I saw my husband, myself and congregational members so often within these pages. Just as in book one, The Choir Immortal has me laughing out loud one moment and weeping the next. A job well done, Katie! Can’t wait to read the next installment to see what’s in store for Pastor and Emily, Blaine, Rebecca, and so many others
Thank you, Katie!I cried, I snorted, I belly laughed. My wife had to leave the room sometimes since I wouldn't turn out the light and go to bed. For those of you who read the first book written by Schuermann this book will read like a homecoming. For those of you who haven't you won't have any problem.The characters are so lifelike that I thought I would run into them at church. Their thoughts, emotions, and actions were so real. Katie doesn't fluff these folks up. They are just like the people that you meet at your local LCMS congregation. Warts, blemishes, and all.The best part for me was the theology. Rock solid. From the theology of the cross to the life of Baptism given to us as sinners Schuermann was stop on.Hoping for more from the saints in Bradbury!
Someone who loves to read on your Christmas list? Get this or the first book in the series - House of Living Stones. This 2nd book in the series may be better than the first! Deals with the joys and sorrows of this church family, capable of harsh and unthinking words and actions, but also extremely kind and loving ones. Saints and sinners indeed! Deals with realistic and weighty stuff - birth, death, sexuality, forgiveness - with a sensitive touch and shows how doctrine helps deal with the ups and downs of life. And this is one of those books you won't be able to read quick enough! Very enjoyable!
Excellent followup to "The House of Living Stones." Short chapters, switching scenes from chapter to chapter, incredible word pictures all make this a book that is VERY hard to put down. I kept thinking: "just one more chapter and then I'll stop." And it was tough to stop.As a Pastor I think one of the best things about this book, though, was the solid theology and pastoral care applied to real-life situations. There are several situations that could easily be held up as casebook examples of how to minister to someone who is grieving, celebrating, struggling. That was the case with the previous book as well. I'm reasonably certain there will have to be a sequel and I can't wait to read it.
I love Katie and her writing. This book shows what love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness are and the people of Bradbury get it in their quirky ways. After I read it, I wish everyone had a town like Bradbury in their midst. Something to be very proud of!!
This sequel to House of the Living Stones is even better than the first, but as before, this one ended far too soon and I now find myself anxiously awaiting the third book. There will be a third book, right? Katie Schuermann is a great storyteller. This is so realistic. I found myself laughing and crying, and I am so looking forward to hearing more about all the saints at Zion Lutheran Church.
