About the Author
David Knight Lynch is an astronomer and planetary scientist. He received a B.S. in Astrophysics in 1969 from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in Astronomy in 1975 from the University of Texas in Austin. He specializes in infrared spectroscopy of comets, novae, supernovae, young stars, and very old stars. Dave also works in the field of optics in nature (rainbows, mirages, etc.) and geologic mapping. Dave has held research positions at the University of Texas, Sacramento Peak Observatory, Caltech, UC/Berkeley, Hughes Research Laboratories, and The Aerospace Corporation. He has published over 180 scientific papers and 10 books. He has organized 12 international scientific meetings. He is currently with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Pasadena, where he studies the San Andreas Fault.

I was so glad to find that this book had been released again! We live 1.2 miles from the fault and can see stark evidence of it alongside our closest freeway, the 14 near Avenue S in Palmdale. We've taken two of the road trips so far, our reactions have been all over the place, from "is that what that is" to "wow, I never noticed that before" to "what, where, I don't see anything". It has also taken us on roads we've never traveled before, showing us once again what a beautiful state California is. Lynch uses a lot of geologic terms, sometimes leaving us clueless, but really impressed anyway, and we do understand most of what he's written. He has a great sense of humor which is wonderful. The only thing that could possibly be cooler would be for Dr Lynch to join us on the next road trip!!! We'd even pay for the wine tastings along the way.
This book has very detailed information on all the locations of the San Andreas Fault that you might want to visit. I use this as supplemental information for locations in Southern California for university student field trips. It's excellent and up to date. The starting few chapters have very clear explanations of the geological background of what features to look for in the field, along active faults.

This is a great product for anyone wishing to see one of California's great geological formations. From the most skilled Geologist to those that just wish to see what California has to offer this is a great book. Easy to read and the author has a great sense of humor. I would recommend this to anyone. I love this book!
