There's a certain kind of frisson which only happens when someone takes a well-loved character, plays what-if? in a way that risks breaking the spell.... and then pulls it off WAAAAY better than one imagined possible.I got that frisson when Cumberbatch, Freeman, Moffatt and Gatiss convinced this Jeremy Brett fangirl that Sherlock could be done another way.And now Narrelle M. Harris gives it to me again.[spoiler alert!]I love her work, but I admit to being wary about whether she could really, truly pull off a romance for Holmes and Watson.I am convinced. She more than pulled it off. She nailed it.And now I'm swept headlong into a vision of Holmes and Watson, forever changed. I'll eagerly be re-reading ACD canon with a brand new understanding. I've no doubt that ACD's stories will be utterly consistent with a Holmes and Watson in love - whether pre-consummation or post. Her handling of these men and their relationship shows immense affection for, and understanding of, the original ACD characters. The externals of time, place, travel, wardrobe, props and physicality are all perfectly in tune - in TV land we would call it high production values. But more importantly, there is a kind of emotional and psychological plausibility which rings true to these two most beloved of characters. It makes it so easy to surrender to the narrative and the delicious conceit of this tale. And as if that weren't enough to get this reader's pulses racing, the adventure itself is just that: magnificently told adventure of the best kind.Murder, treasure, family honour, mystery, gender bending, snakes, guns, ships, trains, gold and more.I blame Ms Harris for my sleep deprivation. This is a one-sitting read. You have been warned.

I admit I didn't expect to love it; I knew I would like it, given the subject (Holmes & Watson) which has fascinated me for decades; and I was thrilled to see yet another entry from the new Improbable Press.By chapter ten, I was totally enthralled by the story and the characterizations, and, quite literally, in tears.I won't talk plot--others have covered that well, already. But I will say that if you love Doyle's characters, both separately and as a unique and special team that has captured the minds and hearts of millions over the past 130 years, then this book could be for you. If you love SHERLOCK, the television show from England....the beautifully rendered characters created by inspired and brilliant writing, and brought to life by the exceptional actors who portray them, then this book is certainly for you. It takes place in Doyle's Victorian universe, but the characters live for all times, including the modern era.I loved reading this book. I'm damned happy I bought it. I'm recommending it to all open-minded, invested fans of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Ms. Harris wrote THE ADVENTURE OF THE COLONIAL BOY with love and sensitivity. She has romance in her soul, and it shows. And thank you, Improbable Press, for the well-written and unique titles you bring us. I've loved each one so far, and am looking forward to all to come!

I am beyond delighted with this beautiful story! This feels like canon, and in my mind and heart it is!I love the characterizations, just spot on... I can clearly picture John and Sherlock, and every emotion rings true (from the angst John feels at finding Sherlock alive to the depths of their love as they shared "vows" in the graveyard)...The descriptions of their surroundings were very vivid, as well, and added so much to the tale! (Australia! Ships!)I could ramble on and on about how satisfying it was to see the boys come to an understanding regarding their feelings for each other, and how lovely and tender their private moments were... Or about the authors talent in creating OCs that intrigue and delight... Also, how much I do love Mycroft in this! This was an extremely well written and fast paced book, and I look forward to MORE by this amazing author!I occasionally wish I were more eloquent, usually when I'm struggling to convey my adoration for a beautiful story, and this is one of those times...Thankyou so much for sharing your talent!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in all their iterations -- and ever since I first read the stories as a young girl, I was struck with the impression that Dr. Watson was not-so-secretly in love with a certain consulting detective.I'm also a huge fan of good writing -- and as a writer myself, I'm more critical of the work of others than the typical reader. And with those two statements out of the way, let me wholeheartedly recommend this story as a beautifully crafted and well researched piece that works as a case story, an adventure, and a romance all at the same time. I loved the unusual setting and glorious descriptions; Australia became almost another character in this richly-charactered work. Elegantly written and so satisfying in every way to the heart of any Johnlock lover!Go. Read it. Right now.

This story was an excellent addition to the Holmes and Watson universe. With the promised adventures from the title, we get a well-told story in a solid, no-nonsense style as this author takes us from London to the Australian outback following the twists and turns of mystery upon mystery. Both the Victorian time period and the well-known characters get a nice showing here with the modern spin of a love story unveiled between Holmes and Watson to sweeten the pot. My only caveat with a full-throated endorsement of this tale is some long passages of exposition that grew a bit dry at times, but the romance of the daring chases, deep conundrums to solve, and of course the evolving love story between the detective and his faithful Boswell more than made up for it.I do give this story a thumbs up! Do yourself a favor and get this one!
