Super relevant, if this was 1996. The book is all over the place, and is written in the style of that horrible 1990s IT guy who is more interested in talking down to you than actually providing helpful information. Painful to read in any decade.

This entire book can be found online:[...]Despite that I have a copy so that I can read it without a device.Based on my exploration of a handful of Linux titles, this book seems better than most because it presents not only some practical ideas/tools/techniques, but also theoretical ones.Check it out on the we and decide for yourself.

Nice. Easy to follow guide.

Theis title was chosen as the textbook for an introductory class on Linux. After several weeks the class concluded it was not a good choice for an introductory text. Although the book contains a wealth of information the book lacks any ordered teaching structure which a student can build on.

I've read (not just scanned) about 15 Linux reference books of varying depth and direction. Rute is the best. If you can have only one or simply can't live knowing you don't have the definitive guide then you must grab a copy of RUTE. Check out the TOC and Preface for an idea of why I'm so enthused. Briefly, let me just say that topics covered (many and well) are each treated with respect (at least a paragraph of text, not just usage summaries that parrot the man pages) and obviously were learned in the field, not from other books. There are other reasons, but I leave them for you to discover. ENJOY.

This is a wonderfully written book, as many reviewers have said. The author has a gift for clear explanation and writes in a lucid style which is far too rare in IT books.But beware! The coverage of topics is quite uneven: be sure that it covers the material that you need.For example, the coverage of mail is a little on how SMTP, POP and IMAP work, and 17 pages covering configuration of exim and a little on sendmail, and combatting spam, It doesn't give enough detail to begin to set up or maintain a mail server. Contrast this with 40 pages on the Linux File System standard.

The only reason I gave this book three stars is that most of this info regards GNU/Linux systems that are running a 2.2 kernel. The book points out in its text that the 2.4 kernel is upcoming. As I write this, the 2.4 kernel has been around for years now, and the 2.6 kernel (non-testing) is on its way. Likewise, some non-kernel material is also *completely outdated* (sound card configuration and NFS spring to mind). This book doesn't even mention kudzu, which is the bread & butter of RedHat, Knoppix, Mandrake, etc. Another way to put this: if kudzu can't autoconfigure your ISA hardware, this book may help.However, the material in this book which is still relevent is worthwhile. If the author releases an updated edition, I'd be very tempted to buy it.

Well....Could easily have been 5+ star if not for some of the powerpoint lecture photographs. I mean how many photographs of Mas as talking head do you need?Despite it's feel as a week-end seminar packaged as a book there is invaluable information here that will save your butt!Not tactical know how but a lot about how the law works and what you need to be exposed to in case you're ever in a shooting situation.For instance if you don't know a bad guy can cover 21 feet in ~2 seconds and beat your head in with a hammer you can "justifiably" use lethal force. Once you are aware of such threats you will have a stronger defense should be dragged to court.As with other Massad Ayoob books his style is well suited for the topic. Serious and clear but a knack to keep the pages turning.Seems to work fine as a book you can bounce around to discover topics of current interest of read straight through.I don't know of any other volumes that cover such topics for CCW so if you are considering CCW I highly suggest you give this a read.

This book, along with the author's prior book, In the Gravest Extreme, will go a long way towards keeping the civilian CCW licensee out of jail and alive. They are both very good at explaining when and when you should not shoot, break off a defense, and so on. The section on time to cover distances (Tueller study) is excellent, both for understanding when you are in true danger from a knife or blunt object attack (and should be shooting), as well as for explaining to the police (and possibly later to a jury) why you would shoot someone who may not seem, to them, all that close to you. Having done the Tueller drill in training classes, I have also confirmed that many people were able to cover 21 feet in 1.5 seconds, and several students were able to cover it faster. Then see how long it takes you to put a round on target from a concealed draw and you will know how important that information is, in surviving a knife or club attack, and explaining to a jury, if need be, why you started shooting when you did. Considering that one round, even to center mass, does not always stop an attack immediately, you can begin to see the point of the section.

Along with Ramon Mahesh's translation/condensation, this is my favorite version in English of what to me is the greatest, most moving text of Indian spirituality. Indeed, were I told that I had to live the rest of my life on a desert island and could only take one spiritual work and one secular work, I would take the Srimad Bhagavatam and the Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Bryant's introduction is scholarly and yet not condescending of the great spiritual tradition of Vaisnavism from which this text comes. It is also beautifully written--the translation of the chapters that have to do with the Rasa dance of Krishna and the gopis and the coming of the autumn rains are exquisite poetry. It is said that just sincerely listening to this text can enlighten you and save you from countless lifetimes of toil and suffering. I certainly have found that reading it is a source of spiritual sustenance and comfort. The notes in the back are also comprehensive and fascinating. Bryant has done Krishna a great service with this impeccable translation. Thank you!!

Professor Bryant is a brilliant scholar and this translation is just one of the concrete manifestations of his unique scholarly gifts. The introduction to the translated text is excellent and, as another reviewer says, worth the price of the book on its own. The Bhagavata Purana (especially the 10th book - translated here) embodies an immensely important tradition in Indic spirituality and should be read at least as much as some of the other classics of Indic traditions - like the Gita or the Upanishads (e.g.). Hopefully, through the ease of Professor Bryant's translation, the interesting features of the text itself and the translator's enlightening introduction, this edition of the text will allow the Bhagavata to become better known and better appreciated in the West.

For anyone interested in attaining the Supreme Divine Love of God, this is the crest jewel of knowledge. It transcends the Vedas. It is translated into a very accessible style of English, so you don't have to wade through the archaic terms.
