This group felt that art "should be about sensory perceptions and should not rely wholly on subject matter as it has in the past."Many Impressionist paintings were being rejected by the Salon as Realism was the more accepted form of art at the time, but that would soon change. The Impressionist painters were "more concerned with what was being seen than with the thoughts or ideas behind the paintings." In this book you will learn about the history of this art form and the artists who were most influential and prominent as the movement grew. Claude Monet most typified the movement, but you will meet many others, including women you may not have heard of such as Berthe Morisot. By 1886 Impressionists were considered to be "serious artists," but the road to acceptance was long and hard.This is a very well written, concise history of Impressionism that gently attracts the young reader with numerous photographs, artistic reproductions and interesting sidebars. The writing style is smooth and the read moves right along, something the reluctant reader will appreciate. The only possible deterrent would be the small print. In the back of the book is a timeline, a glossary, bibliography and an index. This vibrant work would be an excellent choice to introduce students to the Impressionist movement.
