In the face of a mother's nightmare she summons all her resources to recover her daughters. Pieces of Me is powerful testimony to one woman's courage and resilience in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, and to the unbreakable bonds between a mother and her daughters." —Eleanor Vincent, author of Swimming with Maya: A Mother's Story"Pieces of Me is the inspiring tale of how a quietly powerful woman overcame bullying, abduction, arrest and being failed by the authorities in two continents to free her daughters." —Dr. Jane Wilson-Howarth, author of A Glimpse of Eternal Snows"In mid-March 1994, Meredith writes, her former spouse kidnapped their two young daughters from Alaska and took them to his native country of Greece. Over the next two years, she tried to locate the girls and bring them back to her Alaska home, all while navigating a bureaucratic and legal labyrinth in a foreign culture. This book is a remarkably eloquent and harrowing account of a journey that would tax any parent. The book's conclusion could hardly be a more resounding tribute to the human spirit. A unique perspective on a harrowing Greek odyssey." —Kirkus Reviews"One of the many strengths of her trenchant pilgrimage to rescue her children is that it does not devolve into a cloying composite of artificially constructed set pieces, designed to squeeze our tear ducts dry. Meredith gracefully pulls us in to her journey so that we?re traveling into Greece with her, by her side, silent participants, holding on as best we can, much like she is doing. Her recounting of this painful episode remains a taut thriller, a twisting rollercoaster ride up and down the gamut of emotions." —Anchorage Press"Pieces of Me is a well-written yet plain-spoken book about complex events. Primarily told in the present tense, it can be raw, pulling no punches and putting you in Lizbeth Meredith’s predicament… The support she receives from much of her community and from Greek people themselves offsets the anguish of not knowing what her daughters are experiencing, part of which is their transformation into little Greek girls. Pieces of Me is a triumph not only for Meredith, but for any parent faced with the sudden, brutal kidnapping of their children.—Reader's Favorite

Imagine if you went to pick up your kids after a visit with your ex-husband and they were.....gone! That's exactly what happened to Lizbeth when she went to pick up her two little girls. Imagine if your children were then taken away to a foreign country......that's what happened to these two little girls. They were kidnapped and taken to Greece by their father. This begins a two year nightmare for Lizbeth and she fights to reclaim her precious children. Although Greece is a nation which signed the Hague Convention (which is supposed to protect the rights of custodial parents).......Lizbeth finds that Greece like many countries make it almost impossible to get their children back. Yet, Lizbeth perseveres and does everything she can to get her daughter's back. As she travels back and forth to Greece she is met by incompetent government officials and roadblock after roadblock. She shares the heartbreaking anguish, frustrations, and anger that she endures. She writes with openness and honesty about this horrible time in her life. She desperately tries to keep it together and hold onto hope that she can hold her children again. Along the way she gains the support of friends, family, lawyers, co-workers, and officials in both the US and Greece. She never gives up.....even when she finally gets to see her children for the first time and is met with hostility by her daughter's....who have been traumatized by their abusive father.....sadly the girls cannot even speak English any longer.Through it all......the hurt, pain, frustrations, anger, loneliness, fear, brokenness, and financial struggles....Lizbeth holds on and with a mother's love continues the fight to bring her daughter's love.Any parent should be able to appreciate this book. I also recommend this book to anyone who has been a victim of domestic violence.....Lizbeth shares her experiences with the violence her ex-husband committed against her and her further work with victims. A good read that shows how far a parent is willing to go to get their precious children back. Another page turner I would recommend is Betty Mahmoody's book, Not Without My Daughter.

Totally awesome! This is on my shelf as a best read of 2017!! Back in the 80's I read Betty Mamoody's book Not Without My Daughter and thought that any other book of child abduction couldn't be as horrific. I was wrong!! In 1994, Lizbeth Meredith said good-bye to her four- and six year-old daughters for a visit with their non-custodial father only to learn days later that they had been kidnapped and taken to their father's home country of Greece. This book, Pieces of Me: Rescuing My Kidnapped Daughters written by Lizbeth Meredith is just as heart wrenching and a page-turner. The author's story is truly amazing and her path was filled with so many obstacles, that I feel most people would have given up. Unreal at some of the things she had to go against. All I can say is that this is a wonderful book and I enjoyed the author's honesty about her own life growing up. That added to the tension in this book. This woman has strength and courage and she let nothing stand in her way . Do yourself a great favor and read this book. It is a book that will stay with you forever. You will not be disappointed. A 5 star for this extraordinary example of someone who overcame bullying, abduction, arrest and being failed by the authorities in two continents to free her daughters. As you can tell, I'm very passionate aout this book.

What makes me Extremely angry is the fact that so many women everywhere, married to abusive and controlling men that are making their lives miserable , have children. Why do you do this. Why on earth with so many readily available birth control systems available, do you bring an innocent child into a bad relationship. This woman then had another child, sorry, but I find this completely irresponsible as this marriage was doomed before they were born. Now we come to Greece, well many of the comments regarding Greece in the 90's are quite ridiculous. Chased by men, oh please come on by then young Greek girls were out and about and there were plenty of truly gorgeous young women around so these comments are ridiculous. How do I know, have lived here with my Greek Husband since 1975 and the late 90's Greek women had definitely caught up with enjoying life. What was she on about fashion, these comments, wearing covered clothes, for goodness sake, we had Zaras, Monsson, All the modern shops, Greek girls in shorts and young women iun very revealing clothes. She would have ;looked like a country bumpkin in a long skirt. Her lawyers, both in Athens and Thessaloniki were rubbish, took her for a ride and all the friends trying to help her. Why didn't she form relationships with other foreign women, she should have realised that the Greeks will stick with the Greeks and I wouldn't have trusted any of them when it came to taking kiddies out of Greece. Any foreign woman here would have told you, don't go through the courts, YOU WILL NOT WIN. Grab your kids and go. We all knew that, Mimi seemed to be the only one that had a clue. Any Greek detective agency would have found teh girls, post haste if she didn't pay in advance. The woman had no idea how Greece works and she should have found foreign women, plenty of us here, that would have given her far better advice. I lived with my Husband 5 years before I had my Daughter, I married him five years later just to make sure that I had the control. His sister had a baby, wasn't married and we ensured she didn't marry the man as it was a boy and they would have given him control over the child here in Greece even though she was Greek. My Husband and I aided an English friend to get her son out of Greece. Her Husband wouldn't work, was in debt gambling, heavy drinking and verbally abusive. She left him and he started to get violent breaking windows in her rented apartment, we helped her to leave Greece and return with her son to England.Nobody in an abusive situation should have kiddies, if you marry a foreigner then you have to protect your child first. The girls should have been found, she should have stayed and worked with private agencies to find the kiddies and then take them straight out o Greece. Two years, was definitely too long. She didn't expect permanent damge, come on, how do these people get degrees as psychologists etc.,plain common sense should have said was far too long to be away from Mum and her American lie and culture. For that the judge that ruled it was too long, in a way was right although of course checks should have been carried out on the life style and health o kiddies. She had stress later, what about the kiddies, will they ever marry have normal happy lives with a family, to me even the Mother isn't exactly well balanced.Couldn't relate to this seems so many people helping and so many wrong decisions.
