About the Author

Linda Mullins was born and raised in England. She emigrated to America in 1969. Her present collection of more than 2000 bears began in earnest when her husband, Wally, gave her an antique teddy bear as a gift. That hobby escalated to a full-time profession and today Linda MullinsÂ’ knowledge and expertise are in demand throughout the United States, Europe and Pacific Rim. A Southern California resident, she produces the regionÂ’s most popular two-day show: LindaÂ’s San Diego Teddy Bear, Doll & Antique Toy Show and Sale. It is held twice a year. The January show of 2000 is the 42nd of these events which continue to draw international attention because of the excellent antique, collectible and artist teddy bears, dolls and toys on exhibit and available for purchase. In addition to collecting, speaking, educating and traveling, Linda has written 16 books and countless articles on the past, present and future of teddy bears. After an all-out effort coordinating an auction of international artistÂ’s bears designed to raise funds for Kobe, JapanÂ’s earthquake victims, Linda Mullins became instrumental in shaping that countryÂ’s Huis Ten BoschÂ’s Teddy Bear Kingdom in Nagasaki, Japan. She is a supervisor and honorary director of the museum. As the year 2002 marks the 100th anniversary of the teddy bear, Linda is at work with various organizations, institutions and private collectors the world over to celebrate this historical landmark. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer, and ask whether or not that reviewer actually tried making the pattern. I have made three of these splendid bears, and they came out beautifully. This is a wonderful selection of different, appealing bear styles, you are sure to find many that you love and wish to make. The instructions are easy to follow. The ideas you get from this book will serve as a springboard to designing your own if you wish. An excellent book for anyone interested in making miniature bears!!

I gave up on the price of this book coming down and made the plunge and purchased a copy. As a bear desingner and crafter for over twenty five years I can say for sure that this book has priceless ideas and creative bear projects for anyone who would like to create with a pattern or to use a pattern as a jumping off point for your own creativity. I can recommend this book without hesitation and will use it from time to time for inspiration or for a pattern from the experts.

This is an excellent book for young teens. I am a thirty year old college student who read this in a class on Native American Fiction and I loved it! It's a coming of age tale of romance and teen angst with the threat of a vampire who turns out to be a really great guy. Terrific read! Drew Hayden Taylor is also a hilarious person! Look him up!

This is the fifth book I bought of Drew's work and just WOW!!! extremely engaging and just so much fun reading. If you haven't read any of his books before you have to just buy one and you'll be hooked!P.S. Drew please put more of your book s on Kindle please!!! I want them all on my kindle!

The Night Wanderer by Drew Hayden Taylor is one of the more unique multicultural selections I have read. Taylor blends European vampire lore with modern Aboriginal culture to create a deliciously creepy tale.Many multicultural stories are often set in the past so that authors can educate readers about a culture. When set in the present, multicultural stories instead tend to tackle discrimination. It’s rare then for a multicultural author to explore genre such as Taylor does with The Night Wanderer. The result is an unusual tale, rightfully labelled as a native gothic romance. True to gothic form, The Night Wanderer contains supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events and a curse. The secretive stranger who lodges at the Hunter home, unknown to anyone in the First Nations community, has existed for over three hundred years. One minute Pierre can be speaking to a character, the next minute he has disappeared without a trace. What’s just as mysterious is that he never shows himself in the daylight and makes a great effort to avoid eating and drinking with others.True to romance form, The Night Wanderer also utilizes overwrought emotion and a female in distress. Tiffany Hunter’s mom has deserted the family, leaving Tiffany rebellious against her dad. Tiffany gets involved with a white boy named Tony, lets her grades slip, shuns her friends, and acts in other irrational ways. As Taylor begins to provide clues to the background of Pierre, my nervousness continued to build. Is he the one killing old-timers and young people? If so, will he kill Tiffany’s grandmother? When Tiffany runs away from home, and is followed by Pierre, what will happen when Pierre catches up to her? While vampire lore and romantic angst might seem like typical teen fare, Taylor blends them together to create a unique moralistic story that, thankfully, does not involve vampires and humans falling in love.Normally, young adult literature is written in first person and, as such, provides immediate and personal connection to the narrator. At times, I missed this feeling in The Night Wanderer. However, there’s also a valid reason for using such a style. A prime example of the third-person omniscient style in young adult literature occurs in The Body in the Woods, where April Henry successfully intensified the suspense in her crime mystery title by switching seamlessly between various viewpoints. Similarly, by allowing readers to see inside the heads of both the peculiar stranger and the Hunter family, Taylor creates tingles. We know that Pierre has killed even those whom he loved. What is his motive in returning to the village of his childhood? We also know that the Hunter family is just distressed enough to have let down their guard. Will this be a mistake?Although not set in the past, The Night Wanderer also does educate readers about modern Aboriginal culture by appropriately depicting a conflicted mix of old and new lifestyles. Tiffany’s family lives on Otter Creek Reserve, but she learns about Nazis and Bolsheviks at school. Her mom had been part of a traditional Native dance troupe but, at the same time, her dad drowns his sorrows over his divorce by watching television. Tiffany’s grandmother still speaks mostly Anishinabe but at the same time has a fondness for pickles. In addition, she relies on plant roots to cure illnesses while also shopping at Walmart for shoes. Even though Aboriginal families have been granted status cards for necessities, Tiffany uses it instead to impress her boyfriend with luxuries such as jewelry. Finally, native mythology is full of mysterious creatures such as wendigoes, but Tiffany and her friends find more relevance to the monsters they battle in video games.One of the members of the diversity committee to which I belong borrowed The Night Wanderer before me, but then returned it saying that she didn’t like to read scary stuff. While The Night Wanderer did cause goose bumps, I appreciated that my apprehension arose from bump-in-the-night chills rather than bloody and gory descriptions. If you enjoy old-fashioned horror, this coming-of-age novel is worth checking out.

In 1992, the Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon staged "A Contemporary Gothic Indian Vampire Story," a play commissioned by The Young People's Theatre of Toronto. Directed by Tibor Feheregyhazi, the story was written by Drew Hayden Taylor, who in 2007 adapted it as a YA novel called "The Night Wanderer: A Native Gothic Novel." Although I wasn't familiar with the original play, I came across the book while researching Canadian horror literature, and was instantly intrigued by the title. "The Night Wanderer" is a coming-of-age tale about a First Nations teenager, Tiffany Hunter, whose family boards a mysterious stranger from the East named Pierre L'Errant. Turns out the man is no longer quite human, and is returning to his homeland after centuries abroad. It's a very interesting premise that unfortunately didn't quite hold up to my expectations--although I suspect the target audience will get much more out of it.The tale takes place in and around a fictional reserve on Otter Lake, in the central lakes region of Ontario. Aside from the odd trip to Sudbury, Toronto, and Ottawa, Tiffany Hunter has spent her entire life within 45-minutes of her home. She goes to high school in the small community nearby, and has a white boyfriend named Tony--although both his parents, and her father, don't approve of the relationship. Much like with many of her generation, she's disconnected from the history of her own people, and is disillusioned about what the future may hold. Things take a supernatural turn upon the arrival of Pierre L'Errant, who was born in Europe but has come to Otter Lake in order to see his ancestral home and reconnect with his roots--or so he claims. He explains that his great-grandfather had been in the First World War, while his great-grandmother was part of a traditional Native dance troupe that had been touring Europe at the time. They met overseas, and settled there. Tiffany and her family buy the story, even though they're quite amazed by the fact that Pierre's features are more strikingly Native than their own--not diluted through generations. He simply chalks it up to strong genes. The family also overlooks his peculiar diet (he's not able to eat any regular food), and his "skin condition" means that he has to avoid sunlight. Therefore, he spends the moonlit hours not eating any food, and wandering around the surrounding landscape. Tiffany finds Pierre to be quite odd, but as her family notes, "he is European after all."That's one of the issues I have with the story: Pierre is just too odd to not raise more red flags. But I digress. Without giving away more of the plot, I will add that there are some good elements to this folk tale, especially regarding Pierre and his attempts to reconnect Tiffany with her ancestors (and the world around her). What disappointed me was that there was not really much of any First Nations lore at all; based on the title, I thought Pierre may have been a 'wendigo', or at least he'd cross paths with more traditional beasts during his nighttime excursions (this is a fantasy tale, after all). But he's simply a traditional vampire of European folklore--which is not a spoiler, really, since this is pretty much clear from the outset.What really stands out is Pierre's story, and the glimpses of his historical journey from Canada to Europe, where he was eventually turned into a vampire. This would make for a very interesting prequel story, so perhaps one day this character will live on in his own tale.The book was also recently adapted as The Night Wanderer: A Graphic Novel, from Annick Press.

About the Author

Judy Barron lives in the Pocono Mountain region of Pennsylvania with her husband. She is a lyricist and writer who divides her time between writing children’s songs and books, and painting floor cloths and faux finishes. Sean Barron is a very interesting and intelligent young man who has faced the challenge of autism. He and his mother wrote an insightful book on their lives together. There’s a Boy in Here has won many accolades for offering the unique perspectives of two people who look at the same world but see and feel entirely different things. Mr. Barron has progressed to the point that it is difficult to even realize that he once was truly impacted by autism/Asperger’s Syndrome. He is now a freelance writer, lives independently, and recently co-authored Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships with Dr. Temple Grandin. Sean is a graduate of Youngstown State University, and works as a reporter for the Youngstown Vindicator. He’s pursuing a second degree in journalism.

I am a special ed teacher and I just found out that my own three year old son has autism. This book was given to me by another friend who has a daughter with autism. It has helped me gain a more insightful perspective on unexplained behaviors that my son engages in, and attitudes and behaviors that some of my students exhibit. It was so good that I bought another copy and gave the original to someone else who was trying to reach out to a friend with a son who has autism. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to better understand the autism spectrum disorder. It is a large spectrum so each individual with autism can be very different and very alike. This is a true story of struggle and perseverance, written by a mother and her son who has autism.

Read this book years ago borrowed from a local library. My oldest child had a slight learning difficulty and while reading this story written simultaneously from mother and son's prospective it was a light bulb moment for me. Was as tho' I was reading about my son and I. This is a very helpful book if you have any doubts of your own child's abilities. My son's in-laws have a child with undiagnosed challenges so I suggested this book for their family to read to see if any of these examples are similar to their child''s.This is an exciting book to read and does have a happy ending and gives hope for other families going through this.

I am the parent of 3 young children who have varying degrees of being on the autistic spectrum. This book has given me hope and filled me with a totally new perspective on how my children might be feeling and thinking. The book is quite unique, seeing as how it has the vantage points of both Sean and his Mom. I especially appreciated the courage Sean's mom displayed in this book by being brutally honest about how she felt and how she responded to Sean. Her words are dead on. The frustration and isolation she felt are shared by many , including myself (although not many are brave enough to voice it) It was comforting to me to know I am not alone in my feelings...and also to know that even though I am not always perfect in my responses to my childrens' actions that it will not guarantee their demise. Their experiences with the "professionals" in the field went hand in hand with my own experiences. Sad but true. I found myself rooting for both Sean and his family to be successful in their endeavors. Sean's writing is eye opening and makes it easy for the reader to wrap their mind around how he was feeling. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who wants to get an honest idea of what it is really like to either be autistic or live with an autistic child.

If only more of us could read this! I remember when autism was viewed as hopeless. Then came the relentless debate about its causes. And all the while, Judy Barron and Eustacia Cutler were just putting one foot in front of the other, loving their autistic children and patiently building the connections that would bring Sean and Temple to us when they decided to join up. There must have been other mothers trying to do the same, other families who just refused to treat their autistic children like house pets or aliens, but I have not been privileged to read their children's stories. I'm so glad Sean's has been published. His journey was so much different from Temple's, and yet so much the same, that it was a fascinating read as an autobiography and also as a case study. For a reader who doesn't care about social science, it's a good story that reads like well written fiction.

This book was a revelation for me. After reading it and another book, "The unwritten Rules of Social Conduct" buy Temple Grandon, I realized that our now 43 year old son would have been diagnosed with Asperger's if it had been better known at that time. All of a sudden his challenges and the events of his childhood made sense. The best part is that it is possible, with intense effort, to help these people live rewarding lives and integrate with society. Judy and Sean Barron are to be congratulated for their effort and for sharing this deeply personal account. You won't read it with a dry eye but, if your life is touched by autism, you better read it!

The main thing you get out of it is how entering your childs world and participating in their interest can be the beginning of having them join yours.

Slow and repetitive in the beginning it gets better. It goes back and forth between mother and Austic child.Nice to see things from there perspective.

This book provides insight into the perceptions of both the typical and Autistic world. For the educator it is an important read that opens up discussions for understanding behaviors and therefore interventions in the classroom. For parents and family the book provides a look into the child's mind and explaination for why they do, say and perceive the world around them, which feels strange and frightening. This is an easy read that is hard to put down.

This is for a class that I anticipate enjoying very much. One or two semesters of any philosophy class at the undergraduate level is highly recommend before reading this material. It deals with perennial issues. Go Huskies!

Amazon keeps sending me emails asking me if I want to sell this book back to someone else. The answer is a resounding "NO!" You may as well ask President Obama to give up his teleprompter. This is a jewel of a book that holds the deepest thoughts of many of the best thinkers of the middle ages. This is a serious book that most serious thinkers should not be without.

This is truly a remarkable book that delves deep into medieval philosophy. The book treats medieval philosophy as an ongoing conversation on a collection of serious issues. It presents each issue then gives original essays from multiple medieval philosophers discussion those issues. It gives a balanced and thorough view of major viewpoints. It shows tremendous depth and breadth. With excellent introductions and clarifications and inspired groupings of essays that show the point and counterpoint of discussion among philosophers, the book is excellent for a course focused on medieval philosophy that has a general Introductory course as a prerequisite. Any student serious about medieval philosophy should get this book.

I had not read Confucius before and I greatly enjoyed it. I knew nothing of the history and involvement of his disciples in the writing process. I would recommend it to those who want to gain a better understanding of what he had to say and how it’s relevant today.I am also glad I read the two works that aren’t “The Analects”, “The Doctrine of the Mean” and “The Great Learning”, which show the teachings in a wider context. Each of the texts is a fast read compared to some other philosophical books, written in easy to understand language.There are many teachings that everyone can relate to and it should be necessary reading for everyone as the messages (simple at heart) of kindness, friendship, diligence and hard work, and treating others as you wish to be treated are teachings that always need to be shared.

I have to diverge from the whole 7 positive reviews I've seen.If you already are very familiar with Confucius, this may be a good text for you.As far as an English translation, it's quite bad. Not knowing Chinese, I don't know how literally the author is translating the Chinese, but the English sentence structure is terrible and meandering. It's very confusing and if the intent is for English readers to understand what is being discussed, it utterly fails.There are no notes to facilitate understanding the context of anything that is said. I realize that the Analects are essentially a collection of Confucius' sayings, but without notes or explanations, the new reader is unable to distinguish persons, names, places. Most of the time, I can't get at the meaning of anything the Master is saying.I've relied heavily on outside resources to help me interpret the book, but I would not buy this particular edition again.

really didn't know much of Confucius until this book came along, knowledge is every thing including those of the past.

What can anyone say about The Analects. A treasure and the type and book design are good.
