Amazon Best Sellers Rank:
#37,778 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
Just finished reading this with my 5 year old and while it has some good and positive messages, it doesn’t flow very well. I asked my little one if she’d like to hear it again and she said no. If she loves a story, she wants to hear it over and over. There were a few cute parts that she liked, but overall, it didn’t intrigue her. Downloaded with Kindle for iPad app and it downloaded perfectly.Edit to add: I am very happy to see Amazon include a children’s book in the First Reads selections and hope they add one every month. As a busy mom, I have a ton of past selections that I just haven’t had time to read, but the children’s books they randomly include always get read and enjoyed right away.
I just noticed the less than stellar reviews for this Amazon First Reads (formerly Kindle First) so I pulled it up on my Kindle app to see what the fuss was about. It showed up fine on the app on the phone which means it will be fine on a Kindle device. So, it doesn't have a story that flows. It's a children's book (board book style) and I think they did a good job presenting it on a Kindle format. It's also illustrated nicely. It's much better than some of the self-published children's books offered on Amazon (i.e., don't be fooled by some of the #1 best seller status, they're just there because they were offered for free and are crap). I'm not bashing on self-published books, some are very good. Children's books are RARE occurrences on Amazon First Reads so I always pick them. I'm just happy to have something to pick from other than Mystery/Suspense/Thriller/Psychological Fiction (which fyi, are the essentially the SAME genre).
Anyone that wants Alaska in a story it has that. There are two main positive messages, don't give up and to help others. Good short book for young children.
I can’t wait to read this to my grandson! I like the rhythmic language and bold illustrations. And the theme of helping others is an important message.
Nice with real map locations and names. I will share this book with all the little ones who visit my place.
I agree with other reviewers on this book. I also got it for free via Prime, and I would not pay for it, unless your kiddo LOVES tug boats. The pictures are eye-catching and colorful. I think they’re well-drawn and they show cute little boats with lots of personality. However, that’s where the positives end.The book is hard to read, it just doesn’t “flow†as other reviewers have noted. I struggled reading it in my head, so I can’t imagine how it would sound out loud. The text placing is erratic, and the story line is choppy and hard to follow. (I kept asking myself “what is going on?â€) The point of the story can be deduced, I guess, but it’s not incredibly clear for a small child.tldr: the pictures are nice, the story is lacking
I've seen a lot worse. The little tug boat, even though he doesn't give up, is an annoying character. The pictures are cute and colorful, and the text is scattered about the page as though it were floating on water. The story doesn't rhyme, which would've made it even cuter. But my 3-year-old only wanted to read it once, and he glazed over before the book was over, even though he LOVES boats, trucks, cars, etc. In contrast, when I read him Dump Truck Duck, he asked for it 4 times in a row and quickly memorized it. Dump Truck Duck
Not a big fan. I periodically read children's books because I have a baby niece, but this book is not one that I'd race to show her. The artwork is lovely, but it falls short of what I think a children's story should be. Shame, because it is beautiful.
