I love the Conan stories, but I guess you get what you pay for? I wish I had read the other one-star reviews instead of just seeing 4+ stars overall and clicking "buy."My complaint is that some of the stories are missing random chapters for whatever reason. The first story, "The Phoenix on the Sword," contains 3 chapters...out of 5 that were written. So you get to the end of chapter 3 with nothing resolved, and suddenly you're on a new story. Why would an editor approve this? The next story, "The Scarlet Citadel," is similarly missing Chapter 2 (out of 5 total).I haven't yet looked to see if other stories are missing chapters, but be forewarned that if you purchase this version, you'll have to either look online or else buy *another* version if you want to actually read some of these tales in their entirety.
I note that a number of reviewers have noted there are missing chapters in some of these stories. Of this I have no doubt but I will say that this recent version I purchased was complete so apparently, at least in the copy I received, this problem has been fixed. It should also be noted that Amazon, per usual, has mixed different version and printing of this book all into one bad, ergo we have reviews of not only hard copies, but also Kindle and even the comic book version. This is bad.The tales of Conan have been around for at least 100 years now and are as popular these days as when they were first published – possibly more popular in many ways. I have, over the years, collected all of the Conan books, both those written by Robert E. Howard (the uncut, and unedited versions) as well as all the stories written by other authors of which Howard had nothing to do with. I must say that the original stories by Howard are far superior to those which followed by other authors.Conan is a primal force; force which was written in an age where political correctness was nota big consideration and racism was prevalent. New readers need to be aware of this and not be shocked at some of the situation which appear on the pages of these stories. Just keep in mind that Howard was a leader in this genre and thousands of fantasy books have been patterned after his work over the years. Writing, like everything else evolves with time...fantasy writing is no different.I love having these stories on my Kindle as well as on my bookshelves. As I age an my eyes get weaker year by year I find it comforting to know that with a flick of the finger I can change fonts and keep on reading.
I didn't see this anywhere on the book's Amazon page but this book is either abridged or is just sloppily edited and missing chapters. The short story Phoenix on the Sword is missing the last two of the 5 chapters! Avoid!
It's Conan. He defeats all enemies. When he should be dead, he's not! If his enemy is stronger than him, he's smarter than the enemy and tricks him. If the enemy is smarter than Conan, Conan simply smashes him, with his superior strength. These stories are adventures, written solely for vicarious pleasure, Every woman wants him; every man wants to be him. I think we really don't have enough of this kind of writing anymore. I think that's why these adaptations of graphic novels are doing so well--they're written for the thrill of it, for the fun of it. And that's what these stories are--fun..
First off: The book was written in a different time. A time when writers were very educated and had an arsenal of words to throw at you. That's what this book is first and foremost for me. A trip back in time to a place that can teach me better grammar and the proper use of words and context. Secondly: It is Conan. He likes women. He likes killing. He is good and both and the color of your skin does not matter. Some may find certain word use offensive and would be doing themselves a disservice to stop reading because of it. The author demonstrates in the use of his characters and the positions he puts them in, interchangeably, in this chaotic time he has built. A lowly slave on a ship is next a king in a far away land and his skin color is of little consequence to the author. In many ways it seems, on it's surface, that the author uses racists terms and descriptions. Ironically, the way he uses the characters and how they fit into the overall story and world makes todays Hollywood seem blatantly racist and sexist in it's use of actors and players. Thirdly: It is a hack and slash with a lot of old lore mixed in. Ancient races are the forefront and a somewhat basic knowledge of ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, Kush, Afghani/Iran and Iraq would not be a bad thing to get into before reading this collection of books.The stories are somewhat simple in plot at first but get more complicated as the world unfolds at Conan's feet. Some of them leave you feeling sad for Conan and the things he has lost.
The first book, the Phoenix on the Sword, only has the first three chapters of a five chapter story. You know how annoying it is to get into a story and then it cuts off abruptly and you realize you now have to go read the rest on Project Gutenberg? Annoying enough for me to leave a one star review. Do not buy!
