Eloquently written, brings out the power of Perl and why its amazing language. Very humorous and easy to read. Perl is quirky, its those quirks that make it awesome!

Mastering Perl is a book that shows what you can do with Perl in some twisted scenarios. I found myself skipping some topics or sections because I realized that I won't use those things in my life. However chapters are good, and it closes the trylogy "Learning Perl" , "Intermediate Perl", "Mastering Perl".I found myself better to read "Programmin Perl", "Advanced Perl Programming", "Perl Cookbook" (all these three from O'Reilly) and then to read "Modern Perl", which is a very good book, because it teaches you how to write programs using Modern Perl (i.e. using Moose), which I found that is a must.

Very useful! Lots of new tricks to learn in here.

My third book in my official Personal Perl College -- a bit advanced, but I read it thoroughly... Great writing by the author though...

Great book on becoming more proficient with Perl.Cons:Did not come with a Camel as indicated on the cover.

The book is supposed to be "the third in O'Reilly's series of landmark Perl tutorials."The book has much of interest, but I can't accept the "landmark" claim -or even the "tutorial" one. It really is not a follow-up to "Intermediate Perl".It's not a reference or a cookbook either. It's more an exploration of some ratheradvanced - and somtimes obscure - Perl features and idioms. It's no surpise, but still disappointing that the focus in entirely on *nix - frustratingwhen you have no chance to try some of the techniques described on a Windows PC,The table of contents shows that the book covers quite a few significant topics, many of which aren't explained well and/or fully in the official Perl documentation."Mastering Perl" goes over much the same terrain as does "Modern Perl".If I had to choose one, I'd go "Modern".The author of Mastering Perl is often overly verbose in getting to the point. Here is a place where I consider that the "mastering" got too clever. On pages 23 and 24 of Chapter 1, the text describes attempts to build a regular expressionthat will add commas to real numbers, separating the integer part into groups of three digits.$_ = '$1234.56789';# The [final, working] solution presented is:s/(?

What can be better than getting a book from a renowned author (of at least two other books), a Perl committer, contributor and a person who teaches it, too? Impossible to answer, impossible to beat.A few words on the raise and… I do not believe there is a fall of Perl, but you may disagree. Perl, even outside of the CGI programming, is still very much alive and… you can do a lot in it! I also see it as a powerful data, text manipulation and processing platform (built-in RegEx, not to speak of the power of CPAN).The book rocks, even thought I am almost new (I used to write quite a few short-liners in my life under Linux, but they were mostly for some subtle text processing) to Perl. The book does not limit you to exploring the subject as it is represented in the book. Even as you progress through, actually, the book has list of references to other books and supplementary material at the end of each chapter. The material covers numerous advanced topics from how would you debug a Perl program using various debuggers, profile it, clean to how to write your own modules and ultimately contribute to the success of the language. It’s fun and easy to read, has useful concrete examples and short enough code to comprehend. To my dismay, just upon starting reading this book I realized I picked one of the most advanced ones. So be aware dear Perl explorer, if you are not yet at a Yellow Belt level in Perl you are going to be trained for the Black one with this book. So before late, you may want to acquire either the Learning Perl book and/or Intermediate Perl (from brian, yes in lower case Smile, as is in the webpage of the book itself, even though I would print it in all capital letters), depends what belt you are wearing. The only few weak points in my humble opinion are:No coverage for creating charts, graphsNo serious RDBMS interoperability shown, or the use of ORMAs it concerns of me, I need to go get one of the lover level books, but I am giving this book a passing mark of 5 out of 5 stars.Disclaimer: I received this book for free as part of the O’Reilly Blogger Reviewer Program.PS: Full review is at http://goo.gl/IVPFbA

This books continues the excellent series "Learning Perl" (the Llama Book) and "Intermediate Perl" (the Alpaca Book) that foy co-authored with Schwartz and Phoenix. There is, however, a marked difference between "Mastering Perl" and its two predecessors. Mastering Perl, besides explaining some material, gives guidelines and resources the reader can use to master the language. At the level the book is aimed, this is a very positive asset, that is, foy teaches how to learn Perl.
